Subject: Crossing the border issues...
I am Canadian. I will be marrying my american fiance in
the united States. We will be returning to Canada to file PR papers (inland spousal). Here is my concern:

I´m concerned that if I say I´m entering the country (NY state in particular)to marry my fiance that they will not let me in because they fear I will not leave.

What should I say? What should I do? What proof do I need with me?

I´m not sure how exactly I can prove I´m not going to stay in the states besides a letter from my employer stating my current status.

Thoughts?

Anyone gone through this experience?

I would not carry your wedding dress in the car. Find another way to get it there.

Does Canadian citizen has to tell them what actually they will do in the future over the States? Come on, don?t be silly, how many Canadian crossing border each days? Don?t you guys think weekend trip doesn?t work? I mean Yankee should not mean to Canadian, Should they?

I cross the border regularly. I am asked my citizenship, where I am going, why, for how long, how much money I am carrying, they have checked my car (inside and out) asked the address of where I am going if I say to see friends. Yijie... do not kid yourself that on any given day, US border guards will turn you around in a heartbeat - especially if you have a wedding dress in your trunk.

If a Canadian or a US citizen is denied free mobility across the Canada/US border is because there is something really really really really wrong or it´s a biiiig mistake from the immigration officer.

Most citizens from these two countries (Canada and US) just reply to the rethoric questions from the robotic immigration officers. Although among themselves, their robotism is reduced. In contrast, foreigners from South America, Asian and African are given their respective dosis of discrimination in the border. I have even seen naturalized Canadians from those continents being mistreated by US immigration officers.

it all depends what is happening on the security board that day, also what comes up when they punch in your licence plate or scan the micro chip on your passport. They ask you questions to see if you get nervous, or to give them time for the dogs to sniff your car. The reality is that cross border movement is not a civil right - in either direction.

I think it´s all up to the discretion of the immigration officer. In October I had to drive from NYC to Minneapolis. I wanted to stop in Grand Rapids Michigan to see my friend´s new house. I decided to cut through Canada (Buffalo NY and drive across to Sarna, Ont.) I had the car filled to the gills. I had 2 televisions, a computer, suitcases, who knows what else. I suppose the immigration officer might have thought I was going to "land". I just said I wanted to cut across to Michigan and he let me go without even checking my vehicle. Other times I´ve gone up to Montreal for the weekend and with an empty car (except for perhaps a small suitcase in the trunk) they took my car apart (searching for drugs). You just never know. It´s all up to their discretion.
