Subject: Verification of entry to Canada
I am a Canadian citizen born abroad. I came to Canada to live when I was an adult and already had a Canadian passport. I am now being asked for proof of my date of entry to Canada. My passport when I entered the country was destroyed long ago. I have been told to get form IMM 5617, but I don´t believe this will help in my situation. What other proof can I give?

Be careful John you may not be Canadian since Jason Kenney changed the Citizenship Act.

Perhaps the information I gave was not complete enough, Roy. My father was a Canadian citizen by birth and I have held both a certificate of Canadian citizenship and a Canadian passport since 1981. I actually need this information as part of my application for Old Age Security. I moved to Canada in 1982; however, since I was at that time a Canadian citizen traveling on a Canadian passport I received no immigration papers. I was unaware at the time that it was necessary for me to get documentary proof of my entry to Canada for Old Age Security purposes. I want to know whether there is any documentary evidence of my arrival to which I can turn, and what others have done who may have found themselves in my position.

Was your Father in the second world war? Was he in the Army?

Please search your old junk and look for a Landing Paper; that will put all arguments to rest... If you did not Land, you may have sneaked in (not good!) For Old Age Pension you need definitive and convincing proof that you actually lives 20 years or more in Canada

o.a.s. app. (in reply to: Verification of entry to Canada)
Applying for o.a.s. but need date I entered Canada with my parents. Have no supporting documents as this was in 1957 when I was 10 years old. Is there a simple way to do this?

I would be interested in whether John Muir ever resolved this situation--this is an old thread but I may eventually be in a similar situation to John. Some of the replies don´t seem to understand his situation. Service Canada isn´t contesting his status as a Canadian citizen but is questioning whether he can prove that he actually resided in Canada for the period he claims to have. John is right that a Record of Landing is inappropriate in his situation; he didn´t land in Canada as an immigrant but instead has had citizenship retroactive from birth due to his father´s status. Even if John had the old passport I´m not sure it would help much as Canada doesn´t usually stamp passports of its own citizens--so it wouldn´t really prove much. Sometimes Service Canada has asked for copies of old plane tickets in similar situations. However this is not only ridiculous that someone would still have old plane tickets after decades but also this wouldn´t help in all situations. Someone entering Canada by private car (or, less commonly, private boat or aircraft) wouldn´t have a ticket. One would have thought there would be many ways to prove residency in Canada but Service Canada seems a bit particular as to what documents they accept.
