Hi,
Today we received a letter that our H&C application has been approved on Stage 1. Some of my family members however do not have a valid passport. When we came to Canada we were refugee claimants and Immigration took our passport. Do we have to have a vsalid passport to get the permanent resident status? Please let me know!

They just sent a letter of approval.

Normally after you pass background checks they will release your old passports so you can get them replaced. You should have a certified copy of your passport so go try to renew them.

Thank you Roy for your reply. Just one last question: Do you know by any chance the average time they need for the process of stage 2? Our stage 1 was approved extremely fast, they started processing our application January 14, 2013 and we got the approval yesterday. They approved it in 6 weeks.

Time varies depending on where your file is located or may be sent. Nobody can give you a clear timeline they are moving staff and files around.
