I am a landed immigrant since the 70´s from Scotland. I am applying for permanant residence in order to apply for a canadian passport. Would it be faster to apply for a scottish passport? and would world travel be ok with just the scottish passport and a copy of landed immigrant papers?

You probably mean that you are applying for CITIZENSHIP to be able to apply for a passport right?

Landed immigrant and a permanent resident is the same thing.

Well, first, you have to become a Canadian citizen to obtain a Canadian passport. The entire process may take 1-3 years.

You should apply for a permanent residence card though before traveling. Since you are from a visa excempt country, entering Canada will not be a huge issue (you may face a bit of a delay depending on the records) BUT the major problem is that some airlines will not let you board a flight to Canada from any country with a one way ticket without the PR card. But again, that would be between you and the airline.
