Hello and thanks in advance for any help you can give. This spring, I am planning on marrying my Japanese fiance and living together in Japan. However, we are thinking about moving to Canada one day in the future. It seems a great possibility that neither of us will be able to arrange a Canadian job from Japan, so we would have to find one once in Canada.
Is the only option for me (the Canadian) to return first, get a job and then sponsor him, or is there another option where we could come to Canada together and both work as soon as we could find something? Also, if I do sponsor him, at what point in the process would he be allowed to start working in Canada? (Paperwork takes 14 months and it appears he wouldn´t be allowed to work during that time????) So confused...

(in reply to: Married while abroad, want to return with spouse) There are two ways you can use to sponsor him - inland and outland.
If you sponsor him using the outland process, then he won´t be able to work until his file has been approved and he has become a permanent resident of Canada (i.e. until the process is completely finishes). So you´re looking at a number of months - possibly over a year.
If you sponsor him using the inland process (you can only use this process if both of you are in Canada), then he will be able to work once the application has first stage approval. This is currently taking 10 months.
If he wants to work earlier, then he will need to find an employer who is willing to offer him a job, that employer will then need to advertise the job for a month to prove no Canadian could be found for the role, then the employer will need to apply for something called a labour market opinion which takes a few months and costs money. If the LMO is approved (not all are) - your fiance will then be able to apply for a work permit. It tends to be quite difficult to find an employer willing to go through this process - but he can by all means try.
