Subject: Been in Canada on a visitor visa for 6+ years...
  Hi All,

My mother is in Canada on a visitor visa from 2008, with all the legal extension of the temporary status papers so far. Her PR is in last stage and we should be hearing about the PR visa soon.

As per citizenship rules, she needs to be in Canada for 3 years. Her temporary stay will be counted max upto 1 year towards her number of days present in Canada for Citizenship application, as per CIC website.

Is there a way to request CIC to consider her citizenship application earlier than 2 years (2 years from PR granted + 1 year max stay we can count from temporary status)? Can anyone please advise with information?

Thanking you in advance for your help.

No - CIC will certainly not consider her citizen application earlier than 2 years after she becomes a PR. She needs to meet the citizenship residency requirements just like anyone else.

No, your request will be rejected. Moreover, citizenship rules are all set to change and she will have to be PR for atleast 4 years before she can apply for citizenship.

Staying in Canada (in reply to: Been in Canada on a visitor visa for 6+ years...)
Hello, hoping you can help me. I am from Penna. US and I have a boyfriend living in Canada and he would like me to come and stay with him. I am on permanent Social Security Disability and don´t want to loose that, and also don´t want to loose my US citizenship and we are not sure as what to do to make this happen. We want to do everything legal and so far I have been getting so many options but want the best one for us. We have know clue as to where to start. I will be 56 yrs old and I know I will never work again. My boyfriend has lived in Canada all his life and does work. We do want to be together and as I said we are at a loss as what is the best way to go about this. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you Estelle A. Schreppel

Your boyfriend would need to sponsor you for permanent residency in Canada. However he can only sponsor you if you are married or common law (common law means that you have lived together for a minimum of one full year).

So you have to start by either getting married or living together for a year first.
