Subject: Processing time faster IN or OUT of Canada?
I´m coming to Mexico to marry my boyfriend and start the sponsoring process. I´m planning on getting a job teaching english there and apply for my boyfriend from outside Canada, in mexico that is. and stay there the untill he gets his PR card and move back to Canada.
Is it recomendable to do this, or should I come back to canada after marrying him and initiate the process WITHIN canada?

well, in my opinion, u can sponsor ur spouse from OUTSIDE canada, only if u are resident abroad and not on a temporary stay!! further, if u have to meet certain income requirements, if sponsoring frm OUTSIDE, which are not applicable when sponsoring frm INSIDE! also, if u are in canada and ur husband is abroad, processing times are lessened becuz of the objective of canadian immigration to unite families! i suggest that u apply from canada, while in canada and u will be re-uinted in 3 months time!!

Hi, Just for reference purpose, I will say either way is fine. You can check out processing time on http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/times/process-in.html
And compare with the processing time over Mexico City. It indicates that they have similar timeline.

If I were you, either way will be fine as long as it will keep you my partners together with me. The examples of partners separated by the immigration policy are not weird in this forum. You should be happy that you have options.

First off, in response to amy´s post.

Ability to sponsor a spouse - According to CIC, any Canadian citizen living abroard can sponsor their spouse for permanent residence. The only thing different that a sponsor living outside Canada must do is provide proof to CIC that they will be returning to Canada before/when their spouse "lands" and becomes a permanent resident.

Income requirement - As far as I was led to believe, the income requirement is applicable in all sponsorship cases...it doesn´t matter whether or not the application was handled "Inside" or "Outside", either way they are going to look at the sponsors income. However when I talked to CIC, before my husband and I submited my application for PR with him as my sponsor, I specifically asked them about the income requirements - I was told that since my husband would just be sponsoring me, they would be taking a look at his imcome but it would not be a large determining factor in his ability to sponsor me.

Processing time - Applications processed "Outside Canada" are generally finalized a lot quicker then those handled "In-Canada". However, "Outside Canada" applications DO NOT necessarily mean that the sponsor is in Canada while the applicant remains abroad. It is entirely possible for the sponsor to be living abroad with the applicant or for the applicant to be living in Canada with the sponsor while the application is being processed. As for being " re-uinted in 3 months time!!", I´m not entirely sure where amy came up with this time line ´cause the average processing time (as listed on the CIC website) for applications handled by the Mexico City visa office is 5-10 months...if you add the addition month it will take to be approved as a sponsor by the Mississauga CPC that makes the average processing time roughly 6-11 months.

********

As for whether or not you should return to Canada after getting married...that is entirely up to you. However if I were in your situation, and it was feasible to remain in Mexico, I would remain there and begin the "outside Canada" sponsorship process. There are a few reasons why I recommend this:

1) The two of you would be together and provided you´re able to get a teaching position in Mexico, both of you can work. (If you and your husband returned to Canada together, he would most likely not be able to work for 6-7 months..he wouldn´t be eligible apply for an open work permit until he receives Approval in Principle - it takes 5-6 months to receive Approval in Principle and roughly 1 month for them to process work permit applications)
2) The time it takes to finalize applications processed "outside Canada" is generally alot shorter then it is to finalize applications processed "In-Canada" (after Approval in Principle "In-Canada" applications can take anywhere from a few months to over a year to be finalized and for the applicant to be given permanent residence, roughly 9-18 months from when the application is received by CIC to when PR visa issued...."Outside Canada" applications handled by Mississauga then Mexico City are generally finalized within 7-11 months start to finish)
3) Should your husband´s PR application be rejected, you will have the right to appeal the decision. "In-Canada" applicants don´t have this option, if their applications are rejected they need to return to their country of origin and re-start the immigration process from scratch as an "Outside Canada" application.

I could go into more specific details, but I don´t think that´s what you´re looking for at this point in time.
