Subject: Where to start...
I´m very ignorant of what is needed and allowed when it comes to immigration. I´ve been reading on-line but so much of the documentation seems written specifically for lawyers it is hard to get a straight answer out of the documents. I´d like to get some advice (I realize not *legal* advice) from some of you who have been through the system and learned a few lessons.

My situation is this...I am a 24 year old male and almost finished with my BS in computer science in the United States from a University. I have roughly a year left until I graduate, although I´m not against moving and finishing my degree in Canada if it would be possible/beneficial.

My girlfriend is a citizen of Canada in BC, and I would like to move to Canada with her as soon as I could if I could finish my schooling there, or right after I finish my schooling here. Marriage is in our future, but I think we´d both like to have more time together first where distance isn´t a factor.

Even if its not the job I want or in my field, I´m confident I could find and maintain a job to support myself there. But I do not have a lot of assets or net worth at this time. My goals are really to have a full time job, and work on starting my own software business on the side. I have started work on the software business now, but I will not see a return on it for a few years most likely. I will also be receiving a substantial sum of money sometime in the next 5 years from relatives which I plan on investing in real estate...but currently I can not claim any assets from this.

I don´t believe I could immigrate as a skilled worker because I haven´t had a years experience with a full time job, I´ve been part time while attending school....or during some times, full time but unpaid while working on my software business. Although I could have the required funds (10k) by the time I needed to.

I do not have the financial assets needed to be a Business Immigrant Investor or an Entrepreneur as far as I know ($300k+). And although I´d like for my business to grow and be self-employed it doesn´t sound like it meets the requirements for me to be in the self-employed catagory. Unless there is some beneficial "intepretation" of "contribute to the cultural" I could use.

Provincial Nomination: Something I should consider? and if so whats the best route to it?

Family Class Immigration: I have no family in Canada, and have not lived with my girlfriend for a year. From the reading I´ve done I *may* be eligible as a conjugal partner if "you have been prevented from living together or marrying because of: ....an immigration barrier;" I´m not sure if I have actually been prevented...but I guess that will get answered here as well. If I can just go up and live with her for a year (and work) then I would be elligible as common law (maybe married by then anyways), if not....wouldn´t "an immigration barrier" be preventing us from living together?

From reading this board it sounds like other people have had relationships that cross borders here and have achieved one of the family status´ during this time. Any advice? I was under the impression I could only visit for 6 months, and am unsure of what abilities that gives me to earn wages while "visiting".

I´m just starting out learning this information and don´t want to get caught in a spot where I missed something and will have to wait an extra 6 months because I wasn´t prepared. It seems simple enough to me, an educated man with a good work ethic and no criminal background wishes to move to canada to marry a canadian citizen and build a life and family together, but I know the laws are not always as simple as the idea´s behind them. We would really appriciate any guidance you all could give us on how to go about all of this. Thanks for your time,

Bryce

Start from the website www.cic.gc.ca

Download the guide for skilled worker and see if you qualify for immigration under the category.

To qualify as a skilled worker you must have atleast one year of full-time experience.
