Hi,
I´m a Canadian sponsoring my wife (who´s an American) while residing with her in the U.S. However, before becoming a U.S. Citizen, she had resided in two other countries.
Will this affect processing time of her PR application? I hope they conduct the backgound checks in parallel.
Does anyone know the details of the background check process and how it works?
Any help is much appreciated.

Hi,
The processing time depends upon lots of other factors. If she has resided in those countries engaged in war or terrorism then the background check might take some more time.
They start background check parallel at some stage. Generally, background check takes around 2 to 12 months.
Background check process is done by the internal security department of Canada. This process is very confidential and needs no participation of the applicant. This process is mendatory to make sure that the applicant and their dependants are not involved in any terrorism or espionage activities.

Thanks for the info.
The two other countries besides the U.S. are the Philippines and Singapore. I´m aware that background checks between Canada and the U.S. are done fairly quickly. However, does the Canadian Security Intelligence Service have either the Philippines or Singapore in their list of countries that would require a lengthy timeframe for the background check?

As far as I know there should be a usual time to do the background-check since both the countries are presently under the stable condition.

If you were convicted of a crime back at least 10 years ago for theft in the U.S.
Would that automatically bar you from becoming an resident of Canada?
