To Romantic Warrior - Relax! I did not see any reference to point change. However, they are trying to figure out how to deal with 120,000 ilegals in the country in a way that preserves the integrity of the system we are all trying to work with. They have already ruled out a blanket amnesty.

here is the Globe and Mail article. Please note... there is no mention of an ajustment in points - rather an awareness that there are people who currently do not qualify that Canada desperately needs. People with a work ethic that are interested in living outside Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal.

here is the article.

OTTAWA -- Canada´s focus on attracting the world´s best and brightest is failing smaller communities that are seeking immigrants to fill jobs, says Joe Volpe, the new Immigration Minister.

Mr. Volpe, who replaced Judy Sgro last month, said his department is in talks with the provinces to find ways to encourage new immigrants to settle in places other than the popular urban centres of Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

In his first appearance before the House of Commons immigration committee, the minister noted that some of the $398-million for immigration in Wednesday´s budget will be used to create a website where potential immigrants can see which Canadian communities are in need of their skills. While Canadian rules currently favour economic-class immigrants, who must meet a host of criteria such as high levels of education to gain entry, Mr. Volpe said family-class immigrants also fill jobs and he would like to make family reunification a priority.

"In the last 10 years we´ve invited, if you´ll remember the phrase, ´the best and the brightest,´ who have a facility with English . . . they´ve tended to be very highly educated and then not found themselves integrated in a highly competitive professional environment," Mr. Volpe told reporters after speaking to the panel.

"On the other hand, we´ve got all kinds of people who haven´t met that criteria of the ´best and the brightest´ and who can find a job . . . because their skills, their desire, their work ethic is very much in demand," he continued.

"Those [smaller] communities have said, ´Why don´t you give us some of those?´ "

Conservative immigration critic Diane Ablonczy dismissed Mr. Volpe´s comments as "fluff and empty rhetoric" because he failed to offer any details as to how he would improve the long-standing immigration problems he mentioned. She said the current point system encourages immigration to big cities because points are awarded to applicants with family in Canada, and those relatives often live in the larger cities.

If Mr. Volpe wishes to change the point system he should have proposed such a project, she said.

Nova Scotia´s first immigration minister, Rodney MacDonald, who was named to the new post last month, said concrete steps are being put in place to encourage immigration to new areas.

"We have to do a better job of making people feel welcome," he said in an interview yesterday. He said his department will offer specific help to newcomers, such as directing them to community groups best suited to their needs.

Sharon, thanks for your complete explanation. Your style is quite professional and I like it. And you Yijie, for God sake, next time read (not skim, not predict, not guess, not dream not ...) the article carefully before post something which makes people nervous.

Yijie,

I did not want to disrespect you. I even do no believe that your English is poor (indeed I have seen people who lived here longer what you did, but their English still needs quite a lot of improvement). But I think you better think a bit more when posting a message. For instance, for the current message I think Sharon did the best possible thing by posting the whole article here. The reader himself/herself then will judge the it and conclude if it means any change in points or so. Have a great weekend.

Yijie...I am sorry if my intense posting hurt your feelings. I am sure it was not your intention to give mis-information. The subject of points is enough to set a few people´s hair on fire or send them looking for the nearest bridge.

Reading and looking for context is everything. It will get easier. I promise. You are motivated and bright. Keep at it. It will pay off for you - I am sure.

as for the article - Mr Volpe has made no reference to a point change but rather an attitude change toward immigration. it is nice to see Mr Volpe has been listening to me :) I think there is going to be some adjustment to how we look for new Canadians. Perhaps less emphasis on education and more on language skills, job skills and adaptability. We are still needing someone to build our skyscrapers and keep our water running. how they will change the system to bring thoses candidates to Canada will be an interesting thing to watch.

In my way of thinking - this is good news for everyone.

whatever you guys thought about me, I don´t care at all, my duty is not trying to "say the truth, tell the truth, everything is truth, nothing but truth"

if you don´t like it, I am not going to waste my time and finding
news anymore.

Yijie,

I think that since the introduction of these new rules there has been a strong opposition towards them specially by liberal party. They would definitely like to see a complete turn around of this points system, so you are not really very far from truth. We should look how many times we have had a change in past years of Immigration Ministers. A new politician will always apply new rules.....

ok...but the issue was changing of points. The opposition critic said ´if you are implying that the point system should be changed- you should have said so in your report´ He made no such comments.
