Subject: country will eat you raw...moving in late 30's
  Hello readers
elsewhere I read a posting by someone from India who said that people who move into Canada in their late 30´s and mid 40´s will have no point in doing so because the counry will eat them raw....that´s so terrible. We had applied some time back.....interview is up and close.myself and husband both 39 witha 9 and 1 year old girls......
We are not engineers and doctors but we are willing to work our way up.....but I am scared after reading all that....any thoughts please do post....

There are two factors here. First is age factor. Of course with age, adapatibility to new context is difficult. It becomes a challenge to adjust priorities (which is must in a new environment). Second is your personality. Its obviously quite difficult for some people to calibrate in number of ways. One needs to be more open, receptive and reflective to take such a challenge successfully.
In my humble opinion, if one prepares for this great transition by doing research (web is a great medium) to help the family adjust for new environment, eventually it would turn to be a positive experience. You need to be well aware of the forthcoming challenges, and find the solution in your context.

we are in somewhat of a similar situation (early 30´s) and have an interview visa scheduled for april 2005. I think one has to do a proper research. I decided to apply for part time study at a business school in Toronto in order to boost my career if we get the permanent residence. There may be other options that may work better for you guys. It may be worthwhile scoping out the companies you may want to work for and try getting a job before entering Canada. Good Luck.

Believe me, Life is hard but you will be much more happy here, you will get what you work for. Your own profession may not some time pay you much but you can do so many things here. there are so many opportunities here

This is a very valid subject. I would not advise anyone in their late 30´s to uproot themselves from their stable and come to a foreign place but ´the pasture is always greener on the other side of the river´. I have seen lots of foreign professionals struggling to settle here and complaining how good it was back home. So be prepared for any challenge that will rise against you. In the end IF you make it you´ll be much happier.

It´s all in your hands and everything really depends on you alone.

If you´ve made up your mind about moving to Canada, I
assume you´ve done so afer due diligent research and with
due consideration of your own circumstances. Second-guessing ain´t gonna help you now. I am talking from first-hand experience.

There is no point getting shaky because someone else hasn´t
had it quite so easy. Remember every one of us is different. If someone´s negative comments on Canada are
going to put you off, then why bother even thinking of
Immigrating ? My sincere advice to you, if you can afford
it, is to make at least 1 trip to Canada before you actually move there - it will help you a lot and may prepare you for things to come.

Who says moving to a new country is easy anyway ? If you´re moving to Federal Canada, just remember that you stand a great chance if:

(1) You speak good English.
(2) Your are patient, hard working and persevering.

In some ways you need to make your own luck. You´ll be
just fine. Good luck in your endeavours.

I think Canada is a great country also because there is not age discrimination when looking for job. I mean, it is not requested to put your age on resume, they will assess your konwledge and skills! Back in Europe and other countries age is factor #1!

I think as an Indian you would care more about children´s future. My suggestion, have your children get education up to high school back in India and get further in north America. Primary to high school education is better in India as per my experience and they will perform better here after they went through the cutthroat challenges in India.

For you guys, I would definitely suggest to stay away from the green side. If you are earning good enough to raise your kids in India, any foreign countries including Canada will eat you up unless you are a highly skilled and/or not in your late thirties. If you decide to immigrate, please be ready to work in grocery stores, motels, security guard etc.
I am not trying to discourage you in anyways, but this is "THE REALITY".

I also believe that Indians are a great community in foreign countries and they can work their careers and future out the best.

Hey Anonymous,

Even though you mentioned that not to be discouraged, giving suggestions that be ready to work as security guards, grocery etc is very bad for anybody´s morale.

age does not matter if you are a highly technical person, and not afraid to accept odd jobs and healthy. if you´re just doing a DESK jobs before, then you have to learn some really technical skills and jobs to be able to migrate to other countries like canada.
