As an american you can enter Canada on a visit purpose. May be you can tell the officer you are going to see the family of your fiance...

There should be no prolem. Once you are in Canada... get married... and apply with CIC office in Canada for adjustment of status and once that goes thru its all over...

you can stay there... and it should be all smooth...

Hey I forgot to mention this... Congrats for the wedding...

I am in the similar boat....I am planning on going to Canada in late August and getting married then coming back to the USA to pack and bring back my things. Will this go as planned or should I reconsider it?

Also, I have a cat - does anyone know if there are special conditions to bringing him back with me? recent shot records or anything??

thanks

I dont know when these were posted, but there is a lengthy process involved for marrying a foreigner. you need to have a special visa - a K-1 visa. its imperative that you visit a governmental website to get the details: if you do anything wrong, not only could you be in trouble, but you may be denied entry into the country, for a very long time. it is a very serious legal process, and you need to have filed the correct forms. Don´t expect this to be a quick process-- it is very time consuming and there is a lot of paperwork involved.

It is your responsibility to be "in the know." Look into getting a "fiance visa" otherwise known as a K1 visa. There are many rules and regulations- dont take it lightly!

Help soon! (in reply to: american girl marrying canadian guy, what do we do?)
I have lived in Canada for 5 mo. and my visitor status is almost up. I am going to be getting married very soon to a canadian man in Canada...So I just go to the Immigration office and say hey I got married. Where do I find the forms. Having trouble locating them on the web...if you could give me a direct link that would be great. My main concern is after we are married if I dont do things properly could they seperate us and send me back to the states even if we are married?

I´m having the same problem, I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I was planning on moving to canada to live with my fiancee and his parents and get married after 2 months of me staying there. Can´t I just go as a visitor and marry him within two months and stay without any legal issues? someone please reply, I need an answer as soon as possible. ..It can´t be this complicated..

You can come to Canada, as a visitor for 6 months, without having to leave, but you aren´t "legally" eligible to work here, My fiancee is American and he wants to move here to be with me, I´m having essentially the same issues, half the information I´m receiving, is telling me that if i marry him, he just has to apply for the adjustment of status, the other half is essentially telling me he doesn´t qualify to emigrate here, that he needs to go through an extremely complicated and expensive process of application. I´m trying to find someone who can tell me which one it is.

the best answers are www.cic.gc.ca. read the rules, FAQ´s and you will realize that most people have no idea what they are talking about.

In ALL cases, marriage DOES NOT automatically give you status. It is an application - money and time - no exceptions. There are 2 ways to do it, one we recommend over the other because of time, and risk considerations.

If you can get in to Canada as a visitor - you are allowed 6 months. You are not eligible to work and you are expected to go home at the end of your visit. If the border staff suspect your intentions are otherwise, they can refuse you entry.

Getting married to a South African (in reply to: american girl marrying canadian guy, what do we do?)
Hi, i read the other threads but still need more information, i would appreciate any help...I´m a canadian citizen originally from South Africa, i went on a vacation to SA 2 years ago and met a guy that has just proposed to me recently. We´ve been in contact all this time and now he wants to come over here and marry me. I know if we get married here in Canada it doesn´t guarantee his permanent residency. Also i know that we have to apply for a marriage license 3 months prior to getting married, correct? Anyway, he has no criminal record and(he was here in May 2009 for 6 weeks) so he shouldn´t have a problem getting a visitors visa again. Should we get married only after we receive the marriage license and should he return to South Africa after getting married which will shorten the PR waiting period for him? Am i to sponsor him as a spouse when he returns to SA or should he apply for pr status while his back in SA? This is what´s a bit confusing sponsorship or pr application or both?

Thanks
