Subject: no news about parental sponsorship
our friends had a protest of Friday in Ottawa to bring attention to the waits being experienced by families who have sponsored parents. I have been watching to see if it made the news anywhere. Nothing that I have seen nationally or locally. It has been a pretty busy news week so the chances of press being assigned to the protest would have been very small.

I wish our friends good luck. Hopefully someone in Ottawa heard them and will clarify the current and future policy. It might not be the policy that they want, but they deserve some genuine answers.

Sharon,

Just a small correction: the protest was in Toronto, not Ottawa. About 500 people attended.

The rally actually has been covered by 2 Toronto TV stations - Pulse 24 and Global TV.
An article appeared in Toronto Sun:

http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/TorontoSun/News/2005/03/12/958194-sun.html

"Volpe spokesman Phyllis Smith said immigrants seeking to bring parents and other loved ones to Canada should be patient."

"Smith said Volpe has already relaxed rules on spousal applications and will create new temporary visa offices in India."

What this answer has to do with parental applications?

Another article has been published in Metro:
http://www.metronews.ca/column_immigration.asp?id=6894&cid=3251

This article gives an interesting numbers regarding a discussion that we had a couple of days ago:

"For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2004, the department spent $223.1 million in the selection of immigrants. It pocketed $363.9 million in processing fees and Right of Permanent Residence fees. It made a profit of $140.8 million which any fair business would have used to deliver the contracted services."

If you remember, my calculation of the income was about 400-450 million. As you can see, I wasn´t too far.
