Subject: American moving to Calgary ... HELP!
Hello .. my husband is Canadian and I am American. I wonder what process do I need to go through to be able to work in Calgary? How long would it be before I can work or could I work right away? Thank you

you need job offer first, then go to apply work permit.
Or if you want to join with your partner, then just work some cash job. It´s illegal by the way

My husband (Canadian) already has a job secured in Calgary, but I wonder what I need to do to get myself legal to work in Canada? Are you saying that there is NO means for me to EVER work legally in Canada? I am an American Citizen.
Thank you!

I have been doing some research on the net and it appears that he can sponser me ... so I guess with that sponsership I would get permanent residency so I could work? Or is that just a sponsership to live there? so many questions, I am sorry and thank you for your help!

I think you can work under the treaty of North America Free Trade, something like that, A lot of Canadians use that kind of visa, TN visa to work in US. And Americans can use TN visa to work in Canada as well.

But it has to be professional type. You cannot use TN visa to work as waitress, but you can work as an accountant, engieer, etc. You need the appropriate education (Bacehlor´s degree) to support your job. For example, if you have a BS in Engineering, and you want to work as an accountant, the visa application will be denied.

Okay so since I would be looking to do only administrative type work (I do not have a degree) ... I would need to apply for permanent residency? According to the website that would take months. Maybe I would apply for temporary residency?

Your Husband has to sponsor you first and once you land as a PR then you can work as you like. That are the rules.

Refer to CIC site and go to the famliy calss immigrants. There you will find full info. In general, he has to apply for you from within Canada and you will get medical and back ground check. That will take about 9-12 month to get the immigration visa as PR.

try to get yourself on the Canadian side of the border so you can wait in Canada during the sponsorship process. It is not legal for you to work while the process is underway but spousal sponsorship is quick. If you really were abitious you could attempt to get a work permit.

I think he can also apply from Canada and then come and wait it out with you in the US. (not sure about this one)

Work in canada for American Citizen (in reply to: American moving to Calgary ... HELP!)
I have small business in Canada. My sister is in USA. She is an American citizen. I am an electrical engineer .I want to join my profession. I want to have my sister in Canada in order to look after my business in my absence. What is the procedure for this effort? Can she work as a business visitor, or some other procedure?

Regards,
