What is the difference between an immigrant and a scapegoat?
For their sins to be atoned (make amends) the tribes of Israel of ancient times ceremonially prepared a goat and led it into the wilderness to perish. The belief was to attach all their sins of the peoples to the goat and it were led away into an inhospitable place where it would be certainly eliminated by wild beasts or suffer starvation. Since the scapegoat was destroyed the peoples felt atoned (relieved) of the sins and the cycle of sin started all over again.
For the socioeconomic mismanagement and squandering (living off some one else its back and overexploitation) the established peoples of this country (and others) in modern times need to regenerate ever increasing gross national product to balance their need for consumption and greed. What can the do? So the lead eager peoples from foreign lands (who like the greener grass on the other side of the fence and also a bit jumpy just like goats, and are also considered less worth than other domestic animals = means disposable) into a ceremonial procedure called immigration process and drop them into this new country with little concern for their survival .
It is a jungle out there, right ? Needless to say pressures (non recognition of education and credentials, low paying jobs, much unemployment, systemic and plain racism, expensive living costs, culture shock etc) hurt them in many ways. You can see many immigrants being ground up into poverty and worst. (Wander and look around in most cities of this second to none country, or just study past and recent statistics on income and poverty) Unimpressed the elite line their pockets in perpetually and the cycle starts again.
If you agree send copy to a friend if not start thinking!

(in reply to: Food for thought) Bottomline- Dont come to Canada. You put it in a very diplomatic way. Unforunately people will keep coming looking for oppurtunity. True the grass is always not greener on the other side. But Canada offers hope ... and hope is a good thing. Over time this great migration will stop as situations improve at home and new economic and super powers emerge in the east and other regions. In earlier times it was the Irish and Scots who immigrated to North America and the west for economic and other reasons. These hard-working immigrants were in part responsible for keeping the economic engines of the west churning and well oiled. But now its down to a trickle as situations have improved at home (eg Ireland)Till the world balances out in terms of living standards and political climates , there will always be a group of people willing to start a new life and start the long trek to a distant land in search of Utopia.
I hated to sound like someone who wants to give a lecture but i had to seeing the previous post :) . Peace!

(in reply to: Food for thought) I agree but things can be improved if political will is there.I rather have meaningful employed peoples around me than
potential human disaster walking the streets, would feel safer that way. The demands from skilled immigrants are very reasonable. Go to www.canadaimmigrants and check it out .
Thanks for reply mike

(in reply to: Food for thought) in the 40´s and 50´s immigrants came to escape hardship. Most from Europe. They were grateful for a safe place - period. There was no qualms about what type of job they would have - any job was good. the school teachers worked in factories, the butcher built the dyke on the Sumas river. Everyone just did what they had to do. Those people survived very well. They often went on to other things once their english improved and they have now become the heart and soul of our current economy.
Our current immigrants are often not leaving anything paticularly difficult. They are simply looking for something better and someone or something has suggested (perhaps media) that Canada and the US offer easy money, easy lifestyle, easy healthcare, and guaranteed success. Unfortunately, it is a misperception.
I would suggest that I often hear a strong message of entitlement from people wanting to move to Canada. People are anticipating to move laterally both socially and economically. It can happen... but not very often.
Canada has adopted a policy of seeking the best and the brightest. Not sure that is the best policy. I am starting to think we need the bring the very poor but the very motivated. Those who dream but have no opportunity. Canada has been built and has prospered with those kinds of Canadians. Not sure why we have changed the rules.

Canada is not going to be an easy ride (in reply to: Food for thought) Life in Canada is not going to be easy for skilled workers and most of them know it or they are just being plain stupid and naive. Atleast the sensible ones do a google search to find out :). With changing times and emerging markets in the east and the constant fear of "outsourcing jobs" people and economies will have to constantly reinvent themselves. Economist and Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan ( markets in the US shudder even when he sneezes :))put it in a good way when he said its "Its not going to be the survival of the fittest but the one who adapts himself or herself to the situation." That should be the motto of the skilled worker in Canada...adapting,getting higher educations, getting trained on new skills, changing jobs if necessary and hold on to that dream while you do those odd jobs and if you get stressed go watch a hockey game and relax while watching players pummeling each other :) . "Life is too short to be cribbing all the time"

(in reply to: Food for thought) adaptation is everything. just think of the blacksmith when Mr. Ford invented his car or the plaster specialist when they started using drywall in houses. Adaptation and flexibility is the key to survival. As a Canadian I have changed careers 4 times. why? work was not there, my body could not do the job any more, it was not economically lucrative anymore and I discovered my passion! This biggest obstacle is not bringing your prejudice about jobs and who does them to your new country. Waiters are not the scum of the earth, construction workers are respectable and earn very good wages, people who work with their hands have respect... open your eyes and see what your new country can give you.
