IA as earlier specified is the Initial assessment.

It basically tells you what additionsl documents are required at that stag of time.

The immigration officer get your file puts your information into their system and issue you a File no. After that when the time comes the file is opened (usually after 6-8 months or so) and they want additional document. These are mostly the documents you submitted earlier stating your finanacial situation, your job scenario, and basically all relevent information about what have you been doing since you applied for immigration.

If the interview is waived it will come along with the medical examination request.

It can also be a request to come for a personal interview with the CIC officer.

Getting a IA means your file has started to be in process and will be shortly cleared out...

Its the second step towards completion of your PR process.
