Subject: Australian Police Check - Canada
  Hello everyone,

I am presently living in Canada with my sponsor. I am on a visitor visa while I wait for my permanant residency (oustide applicatant - common law - family class). We applied through Mississauga in March 2004 and now my application has been ´in process´ in Buffalo since April 22, 2004.

My question relates to the police checks. I have applied for all my police checks from the countries I have lived in over the past 10 years but have not applied for the Australian Police Check. In the guide, it says that:

"Instructions on how and where to apply for your (Australian) police certifcates will be sent to you once your application has been reviewed...."

I called CIC to try and get some instructions and they told to me to wait to hear from Buffalo and I explained to them that I am trying to save time by doing all this now as I am collecting all my other police checks now. Has anyone heard from Buffalo what they need in regards to the Australin police certificate? I know Buffalo will definitely ask me for this and I would really like to get this going sooner than later.

Actually, does anyone know when I may hear from Buffalo regarding what they will need from me? Should my e client change to ´decision made´ first, or do they write to me first while the application is still ´in process´ to say what they need? I have all paid all fees and completed the medical upfront.

Thank you for any advice you can give.

If the Buffalo Office does not contact you regarding the police certificate from Australia, they will probably enquire on your behalf.

Processing for spousal applications are fast tracked, meaning they will generally not take longer than 1 year (from start to finish). In most cases the entire process will take no more than 6 months. The Visa office usually takes 3-4 months to process the PR application (for routine cases). I´ve chatted with a couple whose PR application was processed in under 2 months.

The background checks I was told take from 2 to 12 months. It generally takes longer if the applicant has resided in numerous contries. However, the nature of the background checks for family class applicants is streamlined as compared to the skilled worker or independant class.

If you really want to know what´s happening with your application, simply request your CAIPS notes from Ottawa. You will need to have a Canadian Mailing address.
