Subject: Proof of Funds at port of entry
  Hi,
I have my Canadian Residency Visa and I´m wondering what will I need to show as far as proof of funds when I enter Canada.

I expect to be driving there to then live in Toronto.

Do you know if they want to see traveller checks? Do they want to see a bank statement from my home country (Mexico)? How many months of bank statements? Or what else might they ask for?

Also, when I applied for my visa I said I would be going to Vancouver, but now I´m planning to go to Toronto. Does this make a difference?

Thanks a lot. I will really appreciate your responses!

Best,
Fernando

You can do the following:

1) Carry some cash, some international credit card(s) at the least and maybe a thousand in travel checks. Rest in bank statements.

2) This on the condition that your bank in Mexico will allow you to transfer funds electronically to your new account in Canada. This is something you can explain to agents in Canada if they enquire your funds. Not many people feel safe to carry all their savings in cash or travel checks with them.

3) You can always go on a scouting trip to see what you are going to do in Canada and then come back to collect your stuff from home country to make the final trip. All it is needed is total funds you declared at time of application to be available at the post when you enter Canada.

4) You can live in whichever city does not matter.

You can live in whichever city you wish, provided your application is not part of an international agreement in which you guarantee to live in a certain area (such as Quebec) for a certain period of time. I do not believe BC´s agreement includes residency requirements at all.
