this passport news is not that huge a deal. it will take until 2006 for air and water crossings to be mandatory, and 2007 for land crossings. Most Canadians who make regular trips to the US have been seeing this coming and already have the necessary documentation.

" Under the new rules announced Tuesday, as of Dec. 31, 2005, Canadians will need to show a passport or other "secure document" if trips to the Caribbean, Bermuda, Central or South America by air or sea include a US stopover".

this is not my area of knowledge but I think you keep your passport from your home country with Canadian PR documents attached.

Becoming a Canadian Citizen

To become a Canadian citizen you must:

be 18 years of age or older;
be a permanent resident of Canada;
**have lived in Canada for at least three of the four years before applying**;
be able to communicate in either English or French;
know about Canada;
know about the rights and responsibilities of citizenship;
Please note that time spent in Canada before becoming a permanent resident may be counted towards becoming a Canadian citizen.

Kenny,

I applied for Canada immigration and I know citizenship is long term process.
My question was after immigration do I need Canadian passport? Because right now I am carrying Indian passport.

I think I have to keep my Indian passort with Canadian PR documents as Sharon said.

It is better to ask questions and get clarification instead of carrying half knowledge. Asking questions is not stupidity and this forum is meant for that. IF you don?t like question take your A** to somewhere else.

passport is about citizenship rather than country of residency. Until you apply to change your citizenship, you will retain your passport from home country.

Oddly, that has caused problems for some PR´s travelling to the US who have countries of origin that have been targeted for Terrorism Watch. PR does not excuse you from scrutiny... as insulting as that is!

I understand this "passport is about citizenship rather than country of residency". Unfortunately this discussion went into wrong direction (bad words and Terrorism Watch) because of some idiot.

Neither I nor my country is on Terrorism Watch.

Anyway thank you guys for clarifying my query.
