Subject: NEW WEST..... WHAT ABOUT THAT CITY??
  To anyone and especially Sharon,

We had our sight set on New Westminster especially near the Quay and now we are getting reports that the city is "down on its luck", tattered, and crime ridden especially along the Sky Train route. Can you tell me? Should we look elsewhere? Should we be afraid?

Thanks.

down on it´s luck... good way to discribe the area. There have been problems with the skytrain line but they are really bumping up security etc. Drug dealing is the big problem.

I think you are living in the US? Being afraid is not part of our city living vocabulary. Concerned is more accurate. Our crime rate and the use of weapons is far less than in US. As in any world class city - you must keep your wits about you but are there places that are US style ´dangerous´ - not really.

As for New West... the rents are reasonable, shopping is so-so, access to downtown is good because of skytrain, night life is non existent...

depends on what is motivating you to consider the area. I have lived in many parts of the lower mainland. There is not much about New West that would make me want to live there.

just drugs, it??s everywhere. I think you will be fine, come on, I live in Canada for some many years, lived in lower Mainland for several month. There is no such place called dangerous, horrible. Like you walk on street, you gonna get beat or rob something like that.

Lower Mainland is not such bad at all; people always use different groups to compare. You can´t use my Island, compare with Vancouver, most of community less than couple thousands of population, or compare with prairie, might luckily have 100 people including buffalo (animal not CIC ok?). Then, there is no crime.

In fact, it??s unique experience, one year ago, I walked along on the Chinatown beside Hasting Street at midnight. It??s totally different from what you saw on morning time. Yep, there are lots of homeless people wandering on the street, smoking weed. They just looked horrible. You can see Salvation Army handed over free midnight dinner for everybody. There are at least several social service organization is there handing over free clothes too. There is music, chatting happen on the street.

Hope you guys can experience this, before I did, as I was told, I might get beaten, or dump body, something like that, it??s not true. Everybody should experience how Canada treat homeless people. See how people can take care of each other.

there are a few places in the downtown east side that I would probably make a huge effort to avoid - but like Yijie says... safety is tough to measure. Depends on your benchmark.

Thanks Group.

You are helpful. We are relieved. We know danger. We live in Orlando!

We are interested in New West because of the Quay, the cost of living is less, it;´s on the River and the Sky Train is nearby./

The other area is Richmond. What´s going on there? Can anyone give us some commentary on that?

We want to live somewhere where there is public transport because we are so over cars and everything that go with them....

Thanks again.

I am a Richmond girl. Richmond is about 50% chinese, with a gazillion fabulous asian restaurants. Housing is similar in price to New West. Our public services are quite good. If we get a big earthquake, Richmond might sink! It is all river delta.

Crime... hmmmm... street racing, a few grow ops, those are the biggies.

In town public transit could be better but there is currently a B-line that is a rapid bus service right to downtown Vancouver. (30 minute trip) We are also going to get a huge rapid transit line that is being build in time for the Olympics in 2010 that will go downtown as well.

Richmond is not a true bedroom community. many folks live and work in the area. Lots of shopping choices.

It has some neat places to hang out along the river (Steveston)on a summer evening, night life is more asian focused (ever had bubble tea???).

what else can I tell you...

I am reading your comments about cars... Vancouver´s transit system is not what I would consider sufficient enough to live 100% without a car. Maybe if you are living and working right in the downtown core.

Come on Sharon, if you complain about transit system, how about me? we live on Island, no bus on holiday and Sunday. Most of Canadian city has much worse transit service than Lower Mainland, come on.

Richmond? Good place for me, I live there for several month, lots of my relatives live there. Too many people.
Quite Asian type city, the best Chinese food I have ever had in Canada.

Richmond is the best place for riding bike, flat!
If I live in Richmond, i will ride bike everyday go to work or school. Compare with downtown or other parts of lower mainland, there are lots of leisure activities going on in Richmond.

Street racing? what a joke, remember the guy who crashed and kill a cop in Richmond 2003, that guy was serve sentence in my city Nanaimo right now.
He is in the court appeal yesterday. He will be free soon, as what I heard. Damn it.
