Subject: processing time - sponsor a spouse
does anyone has any idea how long it will take for sponsoring a spouse (within Canada)?
we will be getting married here in Canada and assume he will stay here as a visitor first. How long is the process? Can he work here while waiting for the approval? (can he apply for some kind of work visa while he waits)?
Thanks.

Hello (in reply to: processing time - sponsor a spouse)
My brother sponsored his wife on June 2003 last here then he received a confirmation letter after month telling him that CIC has received his documents and was being processed. His wife arrived November 2003 last year.

Alice,
I just reread your question. You´re not married yet so you can sponsor him as your fiance. The processing time for that would be longer compare to sponsoring him as a spouse.

Spouse sponshorship is the fastest, sometimes it will only take 4 months. And no, your fiance can´t work in Canada while he waits for his papers to get approval.

I suggest marrying him in his country then sponsor him as a spouse. Careful though, there´s a lot of scammer in other countries. A friend of mine married this very cute guy in Malaysia then when he arrived her , he broke up with her. The problem with that is you have legal obligation to provide him monetary assistance for 3 years even when you´re divorced.

first step is they approve you as the sponsor - I am hearing anywhere from 30-60 days. If approved they will send the file to Burma for the processing of your husband. That wait could take another 3-6 months... maybe longer depending on how complete your file is, whether they want an interview with your husband etc.
