Subject: Need urgent advice!
I´m engaged to a canadian citizen and have been living with him for almost a year. I am a New Zealand citizen, and am in Canada on a temporary visa as I am still in the process of applying for permanent resdidency so I have to keep applying for a visa every 6 months until permanent residency is granted. I sent off my application to extend my stay in Canada over a month ago, and I have not received my document visa. My current visa expires on the 19th of April which is next Tuesday. I have called the CIC Call Centre, and it doesn´t say it has received my application, only the one from previously. Where do I go from here? The last thing I want is for me to return back to my home country, when I have done nothing wrong!!!

If you apply for an extension before the expiry of your current visitor permit the onus is on the CIC and you do not have to worry at all. It might take a week or 2 more before you hear from them.

See: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/times/process-in.html

By the way, I am curious to ask- is this going to be your 3rd visitor permit. Because from what I know, a person can get a maximum of 1 year visitor permit after which they ask u to leave and u can reapply after a certain period (no idea about it). But I think since you r from New Zealand there might be diff. rules as you guys only need permit not a visa to enter canada. Have you already sent your PR application?

Say what people??

I checked my e-client status online, and it said "we were not able to identify you using the information provided" & I have phoned CIC numerous times and it only gave me information of my previous visa application granted Oct 2004. Should it not tell me that they have received the forms and that it is being processed?

Yes this will be my 3rd visitor visa. We haven´t sent off the PR application yet as we are waiting for my fiancee´s divorce to go through so we can get married, then will send it off. We plan to get married this year but haven´t set a date. We did state that in the visa application that we will be getting married. Do you think there will be a problem?

Unless you revceive a letter from CIC saying that they have received your application and started processing, you won´t see anything on E-status.
During my applying for PR, I got my third visitor visa for 10 month. It takes some time for them to process, so just keep patient! Hope everything goes through for you.
Good luck

The E-client is meant only for Citizenship & PR applicants and does not understand visitor permit requests. The same goes for telephone enquiries. As I said before just wait for 10 days more and you´ll get your extension doc.

Sophie may I ask you about your nationality and for total how long could you stay as a visitor?

Thank you for the input. Much appreciated. I have another question if any of you could perhaps help me with ....

Do we, (My fiancee & I), have to be married before he can sponsor me for PR Spouse or Common Law Partner in Canada Class or is it ok for him to sponsor me even though we are engaged?
The sooner we send off the forms the better aye?

So Loretta u´ve already become Canadian aye! :)

According to my understanding one HAS TO be married for spousal sponsorship...just imagine if people start asking for it on the basis of just engagement which cannot be verified, it will be utter chaos.

U might wanna explore the common law partner option about which I do not know much. But again CIC needs substantive evidence to verify ur claims. Whatever u do, do not take a hasty decision as might jeopardise ur future life.

Good luck with it n let us know when u get married & submit ur PR application.

Cheers!

Thank you again for the input aye. :) You´ve been great help!
I will heed your advice, and will not make any hasty decisions.

You wouldn´t live in Sherwood Forest by any chance? :)

We´ll keep you posted.
Cheers!

I got my visitor permit just days after posting this thread. :) Now I have to send off my application for PR. My passport expires in Feb of next year (2006), so can I still apply for PR even though my passport expires soon or will I have to renew it before I send off the forms?
