Subject: Re-entering with the landing document
I am planning to get my passport stamped in person in Buffalo and then land in Toronto.
I understand that I will receive a landing documnent at the time I enter canada. Can I leave canada immediately, stay in the US for sometime and re-enter canada with the landing document I had receieved the first time I entered.

Thanks

Nishant

Sure you can. You can stay out of Canada as a PR for 2 years max within a 5 year period.

Hi (in reply to: Re-entering with the landing document)
When I re-enter I will not have the PR card with me, since I had entered the first time less than a week back.
SO can I enter with just the landing document in my hand.

Sorry Nishant, that I do not know. Why don´t you wait till your PR Card arrive? That takes about 2-3 weeks.

Don´t worry too much. If you got to move to US to do business, just do it. In the worst case scenario, you may lose Can PR or you may be detained on the US border but then if nothing works out, you can always re-petition CIC for admission as a skilled worker.

My understanding is that if you don´t yet have the PR card, you can return to Canada with your landing document as long as you don´t travel by commercial carrier (plane, bus, train). If you return to Canada by car, it´s no problem without the PR card.

If I´m wrong about this, someone please respond with the correct information.

I´m on the same situation.. My question is if I give a Canadian contact address, PR card should be mailed to this address?

In case if it´s not mailed, how to get the card?

Does Canada immigration will know when a person crosses the border before receiving the PR card? Using this info can they cancel or seize the card?

Nishant,

Here is what is says on the FAQ about the PR card:

Is the PR card mandatory?

The card became mandatory for permanent residents returning to Canada by commercial carrier as of December 31, 2003. Since that date, permanent residents returning to Canada by airplane, boat, train or bus must show their PR card to carrier personnel when boarding to prove their permanent resident status in Canada.

So it seems that you only need it when you are returning to Canada by commercial carrier.

When you land, they will ask you for a Canadian address to send the card to. Give an address and then have that person mail it to you. When my husband landed in March from Europe, we were only standing for two weeks for holidays and the officer at Toronto Airport said that my parents could mail us the PR card. The card arrived within 2 1/2 weeks of landing and my husband now has it in for our move in summer.
