Subject: Regarding Sponsorship Evaluation Form (5481)
I am a Canadian citizen looking to sponsor my husband. He has lived with me here in Canada for nearly a year. I am a university student with 1 term left before I graduate. I am aware that in a sponsorship case of this type (spouse - no dependents of dependents) there is no minimum income requirement, however I am concerned because they do ask for some information related to one´s income. Being a student, I earn very little a year (and have sustained myself thus far through part time employment, bursaries and scholarships). I am worried this will affect my chances of being accepted to be a sponsor. We are intending to apply within Canada, and as such have no right to appeal.

I am also unsure whether to put myself down as employed or unemployed on this form. There doesn´t seem to be any suitable place to mention that I´m a student who will be very employable once I graduate.

Any suggestions or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just tell the truth. If you are currently not working you should write unemployed. If you read the second point in the form IMM 5481 under "Unemployed" it is mentioned that " .... If you need additional space, provide details on a seperate sheet of paper".

You should mention that you are currently a student and expect to gradute soon. Tell them about your past pat-time work and provide pay slips, tax returns etc and you should be fine.

SPONSORSHIP EVALUATION FORM (in reply to: Regarding Sponsorship Evaluation Form (5481))
I am in the process of submitting sponsorship application for my foreign spouse. I am a canadian citizen who has lived outside of Canada for several years and just 2 years ago have gotten married and now lives in Sweden with my spouse. I intend to return to re-establish my residence in Canada and is now working on sponsoring my husband under Family Class. I require your assistance on what to fill in under the Sponsorship Evaluation Form Question 2 - My current situation. As a new immigrant to Sweden, I am now a full time student studying swedish and does not work. I quit my managerial job in Malaysia to move on to Sweden and have not been working for about 2 years. But my husband is gainfully employed in Sweden in his skilled tradesman profession as a senior glazier and welder. Will my unemployed status make me an ineligible sponsor?

I am confident that both of us will find work when we land in Canada soon ...

I await your reply and thank you.

Sincerely,
Janica
