Subject: Application acknowledgement
We submitted our application forms to the London Office about 6 weeks ago but have heard nothing. Can anyone tell me when we are likely to receive confirmation of receipt of our application? Then, roughly how long does it take before we hear something, whether positive or negative?

I have been assessed without knowledge of french and we have been assessed as scoring in the lower 70´s. I have been studying at the Alliance Francaise since November 2003 and I am willing to take the proficiency test. I have not taken the test yet, as I would like to study as long as possible before taking it. The question is, assuming it will be beneficial for me to take the test, should I take it now and probably get a basic pass mark or wait a while longer and hopefully get an intermediate pass.

With regard to funds to live on during the first few months, can you tell me whether this requirement will be reduced or waived if we are staying with my sister in law until I obtain work. I will also be able to bring a regular income of approximately ?550 per month into Canada from the UK.

Basically, any sound advice on any of the above questions or any other useful tips eg re-training for a new job (not too long to learn) that will give us a better chance of obtaining a successful application.

funds and francais (in reply to: Application acknowledgement)
If you already submitted your forms, improving your French now may not change anything, regarding their assessment of points to award you.

Secondly, the funds you must have available need to be readily accessable, not a steady flow from England, nor living with relatives will that change the requirement. However, if you are offered a job in Canada, or already have employment, then that changes the picture. Haveing employment already in place alters the required funds statute and also increases the points you receive when assessing your ability to immigrate.

hi graham. though taking the exam and getting a basic pass mark will not change your points now, you may defer taking the exam now & wait until you become better in french so you may get a better mark. you are always free to update your documents at any time during your processing period which may take 3 years. i applied in 2001 & am still waiting. every now & then, i send the embassy new certificates that i´ve achieved. it may sway the interviewer when you go for your interview.
hope this helps.
