I just Googled the best places to live. #1 Norway; #2 Sweden; #3 Canada #4 Belgium. USA is #6. wonder what the immigration policies are like for #1 and 2?

something to consider - education forms about 20% of the points required for immigration - almost as important as command of one official language. why do you think that is?

It is not uncommon for a Canadian to change their career 3-4 times during their working lives. In some cases, a career comes to an end because of technology (just ask a blacksmith) or economic conditions etc.

I think CIC sees education as an indicator of intelligence and ability to learn more than they see it as a specific skill set. Otherwise they would quota different professions like IT professionals.

I am not suggesting this is the best way to go about it, but I would strongly encourage any new PR to enter Canada with an open mind about working opportunities. There are jobs out there - very good ones- well paying ones. What they might require is some training or a simple willingness to live outside of our major cities. Delivering pizza is the lazy mans alternative. (that is true for Canadians too)

If a PR refuses to improve his language skills or refuses to retrain because he wants to wait for the career he learned in his home country - he might be delivering pizza for a long time. We do not need archeologists or history professors!(even though those education points give you the opportunity for immigration) We also do not want someone designing a building based on standards from another country! (even though those education points give you the opportunity for immigration). You have some responsibility to make yourself ´Canada ready.´

North America is outsourcing huge amounts of IT work. Ironically, this activity is making education and immigration more availible for those living in the source countries. However, you can see the problem we have created! We send our jobs overseas (because it is cheaper) and then we allow those skills back into the country without a job market to match! How many PR´s are only looking for IT jobs? I am sure it is discouraging.

The biggest dis-service you can do to yourself and your future dreams for Canada is to think about your skills in such tight perameters. It is a fast ticket to disappointment.

The survey was prepared for the Economist´s "World in 2005" publication, with the remit: "Where will be the best place to live in 2005?"

Researchers took into account not just income, but other factors considered important to people´s satisfaction and well-being.

They included health, freedom, unemployment, family life, climate, political stability and security, gender equality and family and community life.

"Canada ready" is a very heavy (and ambigious) term.

Let´s see.... how can one become Canada ready without being in Canada. Hmmmm..... seems like you can be Canada ready only after you enter Canada. (Thanks to regulated jobs and Certification system) Oh really ???? what a bummer !!

I think we would consider ourselves "Exam ready" (after studying enough) before we give the exam right ?

Anyways, one cannot escape the reality, the truth is that every immigrant has to struggle. (which is okay, as they have chosen to migrate on their own and have to face the consequences)

This fact always appears sugarcoated, that is where the whole problem (of having very high expectations) starts. Immigrants should realise that is a risk associated with getting into another country to get a better life, and if they are not willing to take it, they are better off where are now.

The fact that Canada is the top place to live (from articles or magazines or whatever) is of no significance to a person who is struggling within Canada. It all has to be put in perspective. What is the most important thing for an immigrant ? He/she should be able to support his/her family in a reasonable manner as soon as possible. When he/she realises that this is not possible, they are bound to second guess their decision, this goes for any country that allows immigration.

Spain #10? lol!!! Spain is a Country for thieves and cheaters! for them is Country #1!!! and now it´s becoming a paradise for terrorists, and southamerican, african and east-europeans bad boys! Who has published the ranking should come and live for a few months here (at least should read the local news).

I wanted to reply to Sharon about immigrants need "open mind".
That is definitely correct, but in most cases, it doesn´t help them. The Canadians are the ones who need to adapt this approach, and I´ll explain.
I came to Canada 3 years ago from Israel. I´m a Software Engineer. Many people don´t know that, but Israel is one of the most developed countries in terms of hi-tech. I have been in this bisuness for almost 15 years working for companies like IBM and Nortel.

When I came to my first job interview, the first question was: Do you have any Canadian experience? The guy knew that I´m 3 weeks in Canada. How am i supposed to have a Canadian experience?

I found my first job after 3 months in Canada. I had to accept an offer about 60% lower than I was making in Israel.
Today, after changing 2 jobs, I´m still paid less than in Israel.

And I´m considering myself lucky. Many my friends found their first job after 1.5-2 years in Canada. Those are highly professional, well educated, open minded people. Their only problem: lack of "Canadian experience".

So please, stop talking about "open mind". It´s highly insulting.
