Subject: For Sharon, Yijee and others...

Hi everybody,

My husband and I have applied for immigration from India. Now while we wait for the PR to come, my husband wud like to go in for one of the full time post grad courses (one year in marketing) from one of the canadian colleges (George Brown College). The idea is to gain canadian education as well as work experience thru´ the co-op program.

He has been selected for admission. We wud be going on a study permit for the duration of the course and wud hv the option of getting a work permit for 1 year after completing the course. Now my query is :

1. Do we need to transfer our PR file to Ottawa for address /communication purposes ? What is the general timeline in Canada for PR under skilled worker category ? In case of transfer, wud the file be at the end of the queue or wud it have some priority as already an year has passed since AOR in India.

2. Will this study leave affect skilled worker status ?

3. If someone cud guide us about George Brown College ? As per their website, it seems good. Do these one year PG certificate courses help in getting jobs ?

4. Can a study permit be extended while in Canada or do u hv to go back to your country of origin and reapply ?

5. Finally, do u think that this is a good idea - to study while waiting for the PR (as we wud be spending close to CAD 35,000 for the whole exercise)

Thank u all and hoping to receive yr responses soon so that we can decide.

I will say wait until you get PR before you enter college!
much cheaper tuition fee, financial aid support from student loan or grant.

no hurry

I couldn´t understand why new immigrants, lots of them, refused to go to college and take advantage of 0%interest financing student loan? It even finances your living expense!

it is NOT 0% interest ??? I wish it was BUT for sure it is not because both me and my wife we have OSAPs and we pay interest.

oh,no, in B.C as long as you keep full-time (9 credit or three courses) status, it´s 0% interest, it will charge interest after 6 month of your study finished

guys...guys...hold on please.

Here we are looking at the time saved rather than the cost as it takes 4-5 years for the PR to happen in India!! After that we reach Canada and then join a course and spend another 2 years in college before we can even hope to settle down. That does seem a long wait (as good as wasting 4-5 years doing nothing that cud improve our chances in Canada)

Cud i have your comments on this one...

thanks

It depends on the time you will study, family, children, you could spend easily more than 35k a year and the chances to get a job with a work permit depends on the place you choose to stay. Taking these into account and, let?s say, 150 CAD, I would do it.

I mean 150K or less for 2 o 3 years, again depends on family size. You could extend indefinitely your student visa while you demonstrate you are financially Ok.

What makes you think you WILL get a job after graduating from a 1 yr. prog.?

Have you looked at placements of Intl. students from these programs?

Cost or Time really are not the factor : the main is getting a relevant job after you graduate.
