Subject: Sponsoring his Chinese wife in China
  Could somebody help me?

My son tried to have his girl friend come to Canada as a visitor for 6 months. She intended to go back to China to write exams at the university and then immigrate to Canada. She was refused a visa to come as a visitor. So they got married in China.

My son is back to Canada and he will sponsor her.

1. Do you think she will be given her PR easily even if she was refused twice as a visitor?

2. My son lives in Quebec. Do you know how long it will take to have his sponsorship accepted by Canadian Immigration? And by Quebec Immigration?

3. Do you know how long it will take for the wife to be given her PR in Beijing?

4. They are very much in love and would like to be reunited very soon.

5. If she is refused, do you think we should hire a consultant?

I thank all of you for your reply.

i also applied for a visitor´s visa to canada twice but was denied. i am also from southeast asia. so my canadian bf came over to my country and got married here. that was in april of 2004. family reunification is a priority of immigration canada. eventhough she was refused twice to come to canada, that is not a ground for her PRV not to be isssued. the one important thing about sponsoring a spouse to come to canada is that u should prove to the immigration that ur relationship is genuine and continuing. we submitted our papers in june and now im just awaiting for the final decision. goodluck and best wishes!!!

I too am overwhelmed with the amount of detailed information required to sponsor my wife. I am considering using a consultant. What I want to know is exactly what a consultant will do. I also want to know if I can reduce the cost by filling in the forms as well as possible by myself first. Then I could have a consultant look it over and offer advice. However, I don´t know if they expect you to do that first anyway, then still charge $2,000 - $5,000.

Perhaps all I really need is an interpreter or translator because a lot of my frustration comes from the fact that my wife only speaks a little English. I am studying Mandarin at night school, but I´ve got a long way to go.

My son sponsored his wife and everything went very smootly. You do not need a lawyer and it would be a waste of money, if your case is an easy one.

First you have to read all the forms very slowly. And then read them again.

Then, you have to fill one form at the time. You will see, it is very easy to do, though it takes time. The problem is that at the beginning we see all of them at the same time. But one after another is easy.

Be sure that you can prove that your relation is genuine. Any pictures letters, bill phone, letters from friends, family, place tickets, etc. If you speak by internet, explain. Pay everything up front. And, most important, absolutely everything you will say must be TRUE. Because they have many ways to know, and if you say anything false, you will be in big problem.

My son began his sponsorhip in Mississaugua at the end of July and the visa was issued at the end of October. The only reason why it was a little long is that she needed a Quebec Selection Certificate.

So do it by yourself, give absolutely all information that is required (more is better than less) and everything will be fine.

Good luck.

I have great empathy for you. I too have embarked upon this trial of a marriage strength. I suggest you screen the consultants and thier knowledge. I had outstanding issues from previous relationships ( children and support) and was lead to believe this was an issue. It can be if you owe child support. In my case the custody was unsettled. This is NOT an issue so I discovered. I was also told I needed to have a savings in excess of $10,000. This I also have come to know is untrue. A steady job, a settled home address is more important. Consultant fees vary from $500 to $5000. To say you get what you pay for is not always true. Through everything my wife and I have encountered I have discovered we would have "circumvented" the system or taken short cuts if she had come to Canada on a Visitor Visa and then married while she was here. However we followed the "honourable" path and married before consumating the marriage. Now we are working through the quagmire of goverment red tape. The governement concern in both countries is that such marriages are "marriages of convenience". The real need to expediate this process is to show the marriage is genuine. Return visits help immensely but the cost is high. Generally a one year wait is considered very quick. I can only say Be patient, honest in your love and pray for a break in the progress. Good luck
