Subject: the truth about finding a job in Canada
Let´s assume I lose my job today. I have lived in Canada all my live and have Canadian experience. This is my reality...

I make sure my resume is up to day. I start to look at the various websites, trade magazines, newspapers, etc to find out if there are any job postings that match my skills. I also try to ask around if anyone knows of people hiring.

I might get lucky the first week - or I might have to wait awhile.

If after 2-3 weeks I am not successful, I will start to ask myself what else I can do besides my job of choice. I look at my options, do research to find out what else I might be qualified to do.

how long might this take 2 weeks maybe? all this time I send out resumes, make phone calls, cold call etc.

An employer sees my resume and invites me to an interview. He will be talking to 5-6 people. I must wait 3-4 days for my appointment and then I wait another 4-5 days to find out if I am successful. all the while - I keep looking. The interview went well but the employer does not take me. There is someone else more suitable for the job... or I want too much salary.

There are jobs available today that pay less and are not my first choice - so I will keep trying on my chosen path.

I am at 2 months and nothing yet. Fortunately, I have a little bit of savings to pay my bills while I continue to find the right opportunity.

I see that there are employers begging for workers in another skill - but I do not want to do that work, or I do not want to do labour job... so I keep looking.

I am at 3 months now and I am almost out of money. I have worked enough to earn Employment insurance. It pays me a little bit for 16 weeks which is how long they think it will take me to find a new job and earn my first paycheque. They are right.

I finally find something. It is not my first choice - but it is close to my house and I can continue to look after I start working. They do not want me to start for 10 days so I will have to pay my own expenses out of my savings for another few weeks. Thank goodness I have that money.

I start my job. Not what I thought it would be when I started - but it is a steady job and it pays me what I need.
I am thankful. I think I will consider some of those jobs where employers are begging for workers. Looks like the pay might be even better than what I will make in my profession.

***my point... this happens every day to naturalized Canadians. As a PR you should expect nothing different. There are jobs out there - just a matter of time and persistance. You must simply realize this is how the job market works in North America - for everyone.

Good analysis Sharon.

However, when someone takes the steo and decide to immigrate to Canada, he expects some support from the country. As he needs Canada as his new home, Canada wants him too for its development. So, how come Canada opens its arms for immigrants and meanwhile they land and find no jobs to share with its development. I mean, there is something missing in the equation. If I invite someone to my house to help me develope that house, I am obliged to support somehow till he gets his stability and start his production. Wellfare is not the answer. Most of us (immigrants) did have good jobs and middle life style at our home countries, and we want accept wellfare even from our own families. The mater is also self satisfaction that never happens that way.

Shortly, we expect that Canada should as example motivate employers by lower tax rates if they employ immigrants at their organizations for a limited time, also, to reduce the income tax for immigrants till they get the passports to pass that early days of working in low paid jobs.

More other options could help balance the equation. They really have to address our issues.

I am Egyptian with PR Status and currently working in Dubai, United Arab Emirates as a Pro Engineer having 20 y of exp and with an income equal to over CAN$ 80,000. Do you expect that I will leave such job and start roaming in Canada for a job that would not pay more than half of that.

Why I want to immigrate to Canada, for better high education of my kids. Canada is very cheap in that regard.

I really wanted to land and get a proper job in canada and start building for the future of my kids who one day will be Canadians and help with its development. But how can I do that now. I am have almost gave up and will withdraw the idea of maintinaing my PR or seeking the passport.

Thats All.

I think most people who drive cabs and deliver pizza´s are from Asia regions. dosn´t mean that they r not capable of to do their jobs as per their professional degree. But they are smart enough to manuiplute their earnings. Since If they go for jobs then they have to pay heavy taxes. They have compared all these things and well calculated their net earnings and then decide to do their own business (i.e drive a cab or deliver pizsa). In their own business they manuiplate their earning and save some money.

It shows that they are multiskilled person and flexibility to adopt any profession as per situation.

I think they are proving much better than their original profession.

What is the harm if they don´t do jobs in their profession.

In every new place and in new country immidiately a person needs a job. In such case he does some odd jobs.
It is better than begging, borrowing or stealing. Atleast he is doing some honestly jobs.

It is for canuck not to have such sharp comments which may hurt someones sentiments feeling like us.

I think if Canada Govt. opens its door unconditional for one hour my birth place (Punjab, India) will be empty.

India is our birth place but Canada is our work place.

Canada spends millions of dollars every year helping immigrants get adjusted. I am sure they could do more - but there is a limit.

CIC structures its immigration criteria to help determine who has the best chance of success. Ironically, applicants do everything in their power to beat that 67 point cut off and ignore what the points tell them.

Perhaps CIC applicants should see the point system as their friend that will save them from a very hard adjustment.

if you have 67 points but only 10 in language - you can be sure your adaptation to Canada and the job market will be very hard. It is a guarantee - no matter what your profession.

It is so easy to blame the system and the country. I think everyone must take some responsibility.

Here is another way to look at it (in reply to: the truth about finding a job in Canada)
In our country there are taxes ... there are cops ... there are gov´t offices...

we pay taxes ... but nothing happens to our roads to our way of life ... stays the same ... prices of goods are increasing and salary stays put ..

the cops are nowhere to be found ... unless you have some extra cash to pay them do there work ... say if your house was broken in .. or you simply need a police report if you get into an accident

gov´t offices are a laugh .... not all .. just some ..

here in the U.S. .... I get a job .. I am able to pay for all my bills .... I need a driver´s license there is the internet ... simple .. I want my kid to get into school .. i look for a good public school .. simple as that ... I get into an accident .. the cops are there ... although some would say that this is not the case for everyone ... it is for me ...

and I´m willing to bet in Canada it will be the same .. I have decided to try out Canada .. because the Permanent Resident papers in the U.S. is taking sooooo long .. after 9/11 ...

going back home is the least option we have ..

and one more thing ... when I open the faucet here there is water ... when i open my fridge there is ice ..

back home... it is not that easy.. there is water ... there is ice .. but not that convenient ..
