Subject: Activating my Immigration Status
  Hi,

I was wondering if someone could assist me. I am hoping to emigrate from the UK to Canada sometime this year. I had my medical in December 2004 and now have my permanent residency visa.

I understand that I have 1 year from when I had my medical to enter Canada and "activate" my visa.

I am intending on going over to Toronto and Vancouver in June for 2 weeks on reconnaisance trip to check out job and accommodation situations.

(1) Will this 2-week trip "activate" my visa, so I will not necessarily have to enter Canada long term before December?

(2) Are there any other circumstances I need to be concerned with?

(3) Do I need to be in Canada for a certain period of time in order to retain the visa?

Many thanks to anyone who can help.

Regards,

Andy

I was told by an immigration paralegal that you need only "land" for a week or two to establish your PR status and then you can leave for almost three years because you only have to be in Canada for two of the five years after landing. Of course, you should confirm with the gov´t or an attorney yourself, but this is what I´ve been told and have seen in several postings elsewhere.

Hello,

Here are the answers based upon the landing of my husband:

1) Yes this two week trip will activate your visa. My husband stayed in Canada for two weeks (we were on holidays to visit my parents) and then returned home to Switzerland. The landing occurs when you arrive at the port of entry. Ours was at Toronto Pearson International Airport and the whole landing procedure was finished in 15 mintues.

2) You have to watch out for your PR card. This card you will need the next time you board the plane to come to Canada. If you do not have this card, you will have to get travel document in order to travel back to Canada. You need to give a Canadian address where the PR card can be mailed. The officer who did our landing told us that my mom was able to mail the PR card to me once it arrived at her address. The card arrive 3 weeks after the landing and my mother then mailed it to us in Europe.

I dont have much knowledge with this point, but if you applied as a skilled worker (we applied in the sponsorship category) you need to have proof of funds when you land. From what I read on this forum, you need to have around $10,000.

Another point is the lists of your belongings for customs. Since we were not staying long, we did not make the any lists for the landing. We will prepare the lists when we move for good in August. You need to have two lists, one containing the articles that you are bringing with you and one of the articles that will follow later.

3)You do not need to be in Canada for a certain period of time in order to retain the visa. The visa is just a one time thing that you can use to land. Once you have landed, you will then become a permanent resident of Canada. In order to keep your permanent resident status, you need to be in Canada for 2 years out of the next 5 years.

I hope this information helps you out and gives you the answers you needed. Good luck!

Landing even for one day will initiate you status as a PR to Canada.

You should make a local address ready with you at the landing port. You will be asked where r u going to stay and for how long. They will mail your PR Card to that address. So tell that you will stay for a while till you get a job. Do not mention moving to another city otherwise they will ask you to supply them with an address of your final location.

You have to apply for the SIN card while there. Use the same address to get the SIN Card in the mail.

That address should be of a relative or a friend of yours.

You can then leave. Your freind is to send these cards t you at your home country. The PR will used to re-enter Canada.

To maintain you PR status you have to stay in Canada for 2 years every 5 years. (Theoritically).

Good LUck..
