Subject: My Experience in Canada
I have been reading all the comments on this forum and while it is disheartening, I think the people coming to Canada are not doing the research properly. There is no free lunch - anywhere, weather it is Canada or any part of the globe.

Life in Canada IS good IF you can find a job there. But the job market remains dismal (and people hoping that will turn around are only hoping against all odds.) Of course, that also means bad business prospects and high costs etc. So then, one may ask, why come to Canada at all?

Well, take Canada for what it is - An excellent stepping stone to the US (and that´s about it). Once you are Canadian Citizen you can use it to work in the US. That process takes 3 years and that time will be well spent being a student at an excellent and low cost Canadian univ like Toronto / Waterloo / UBC. (Don´t bother with the no name ones and PLEASE don´t go to the French ones).

So essentially then, it is a good place if you are in your mid to late 20s, want to pursue a graduate degree and then move on to the US where Canadian citizens can work on TN Visa (and hopefully H1 and then green card). Anyone not fitting this profile has much more to lose than gain. If you are into your late 30s to late 40s, try to put things in perspective - Canada has little to offer you and you will be blowing up your savings. Weather you are black/white/Asian/Latino - doesn´t make a difference. There is racism, but the economy is the main problem. The job market is just awful. You will have to struggle to meet basic needs. If that is still appealing, go ahead - You will be totally responsible for your own peril.

I came from India, leaving behind a well paid job as a software engineer (6 lakhs per year). I was still 27 when I came, so after trying for a job for one year without results, I switched to grad school, did a masters from U Toronto and as soon as I got citizenship, went to the US where I am still on TN status and working in a good job. Thankfully US still considers Canadian universities to be equal in terms of education quality. Besides this, I see no merit to life in Canada. Earlier on, retired Canadian citizens used to be able to collect benefits even if living abroad. Now they cant even do that So all you are left with is an expensive country with freezing temperatures. Best of luck,
Vinod, Albany, NY

Intersting View...
Many come knowing this but hoping that they will succeed and live well. In many other countries they don´t have a chance to succeed.

this is such an encouraging post. Looks like Canada is nothing more than an immigration whore. Use and abuse a country that will accept you, so you can use it one more time to go to another place.

I wonder how the Canadian public would feel about such an attitude. I wonder how the Canadian government views this mentality.

People coming for as little time as possible, using Canada as a ticket into US...that was not the intention of an open and accessible immigration policy. Perhaps it is time that if you go to the US to work, your forfeit your Canadian PR. Perhaps it is time to follow US model and only issue work permits - never PR´s.

Canada is not a bridesmaid.

For the last little while , it seems that a lot of people have been writing about their "issues" about why people shouldn?t immigrate to Canada.

I think that many people in this forum is looking forward for a better quality of live and some others just a family reunification but at the end , we just want to live better.

Most of the poeple for nature complains... in the winter is too cold but in the summer is too hot! go figure!

How can you make a human being happy? almost impossible!

I could spend time looking for happy comments of immigrants who were almost dying in their home country and found a safe haven in Canada and a lot of heavy bussines people who made a huge company in Canada and it was only a dream in their home country!

Canada is a young and growing country and WE the Immigrants can make it stronger.

Do not allowed these bunch of hozers to let you down with their poor comments.
For all those are Immigrating... have a good live in the
Great White North Eh!

Thanks, Andy! I just recently discovered this forum and it really ought to be, it appears, renamed to something like Disgruntled Canadian Immigrants and Wannabes. For those who think the US is so great, do your reading. And, if not, at least consider that different places will be very different for different people.

Canada does not prohibit gays and lesbians from serving in their armed forces. Most Canadian provinces permit same-sex marriage. I´m not, of course, saying that individuals do not discriminate, but at least the government has tried to interpert the Charter in a way that is more humane than the US Supreme Court has done with the U.S. Constitution.

Canada is not perfect. None of us will ever find that place. But, everyone, do your homework before you go to Canada. And, consider that while it may not be so great for everyone, it´s heaven compared to the government sanctioned hatred many of us experience here in the US.

Sharon says: "Looks like Canada is nothing more than an immigration whore"

Correct!

If Canada were a person it would be Anna Nicole Smith - really big, completely pointless and everybody´s whore.

Canadian immigration will go thru´ a change gradually and a few years down the line, it will have to bend its back to immigrants. I just hope that we can see these posts then, we can then laugh at some of the convictions people are holding right now, and oh so dearly. Someone truly said, Ignorance is Bliss.

it´s policy problem and we should respect any immigrants choice, as long as it´s legal.

You know what? There is no private health care in Canada, long waiting public health care, Canada government rather lets people go to south for treatment, than have private health care at the same time.

you can not blame people, same as immigrants, if you don´t have programs to assist immigrants, anyway they gonna go.
like birds migrate.
