Anyone know how does Canada evaluate the IELTS scores ? Is that by overall average or by individual sections ?

What band do I need to get 16 points (the max) ?
Thanks
Raj

You will need to score at least 7 in all the four sections of the IELTS to get the max 16 points. The overall score does not matter.

Very helpful. Thanks for the link. I make 73 pts if I get all 16. So since the reqd points are 67, I guess just 10 would be enough, which translates to me scoring a band 7 in atleast one section of the test.
Ok great, I feel comfortable now !!

some well meaning advice (in reply to: IELTS)
Raj...10 might be good enough for CIC but please do not be satisfied that 10 will give you good chances for success once you reach Canada.

Language proficiency is a huge factor in your ability to find quality employment. Do everything you possibly can to get your language score to the 16 level. It will be worth thousands of dollars to you.

Sharon,
I appreciate your concern. I don´t want to brag, but I feel I have very good communication skills in English.
But it was a while since I took any such test like this, you know like in the classroom with an examiner and stuff, so I was kinda rusty.
So I was contemplating taking it again if I get low scores. Now you tell me, would I need to show prospective employers my score ? If that were true then I will have to think about re-appearing it.

Just relax, you´ll do fine judged by your writing. The English I picked up at school didn´t reached further than "Mary is picking flowers in the garden" and " The dog is barking in the back yard " . I sort of tought it myself by reading a lot and listening a lot and still got a 9 on speaking and an 8 on writing.Don´t underestimate the reading section, in my opinion the trickiest section of them all.And do try some of those on-line tests, just to give you an idea how the test works.

John,
Thanks for the tip.
I have already appeared in the test last weekend, expecting scores by next weekend. You are right, reading is a "tricky" one, the rest is fine. I solved the "Academic" tests, from the books just to realize (abt an hour before the exam) that I had to work on the "General" part and not the Academic.
But I guess Academic was supposed to be a bit tougher, so it bailed me out, just the format was different, more visuals in the General test. I was not used to see that a lot.

Raj... not saying you need to show your score to a prospective employer... but you may be on to a good idea for those who want to reassure a company that they have strong skills in english.

The point of my comment was to encourage you to make every effort to have the best possible english skills when you get to Canada. It will only pay off in a positive way. There are 2 hurdles with immigration. CIC, and then the Canadian job market. I want you to do well in both situations.
