Subject: With a consultant or not ???
How many people here feel safe to apply with the help of a immigration lawyer/consultant?

I know I applied without any consultant and now I am at a stage of PP request. I applied in March 2004 at Buffalo.

Any advantages you think it is to apply with or without a consultant ???

What are you ideas...

In my view, no need at all for agents except if the applicant has something special like security records, illness, delayed applications, etc.

But for str8 cases, do it yourself.

In manila, having a consultant is quite costly. I do hire an agency but I regret it. I think one can do without agency-consultant / lawyer but do your research too. Keep in touch with this forum. It´s very very helpful. Go over & over with the application kit so you won´t miss any important detail / instructions.

Harshal , my experience with the consultant did not turn out to be a good one. I started the application with this particular consultant who is an ex CIC officer in last May. Till Feb 2005 we kept sending and resending and resending.. documents etc. Finally I had to sent in the application myself. It might be one of the rare experience(I hope). I would agree that unless you have forthright complications, the process looks very str8 forward.

I really debated hiring someone and ended up doing so. I´m a US citizen, no police record or things that should be problematic. I´m a Ph.D. and a licensed attorney. You might think I should have just done it on my own. Well, yes, I could have done so. I had all the materials off the web including instructions, etc. But, there are some ambiguities therein. I finally decided to hire someone and I´m soooo glad I did. The paralegal with whom I´m working has been very, very helpful and I´m pretty sure that some of the things I had missed on my forms, etc. would have caused me to end up in the "send us corrections" pile. If this cost keeps me out of that, alone, it will have been worth it!

I think the agent/attorney´s help may be necessary mostly during the application preparation (for the initial application).
The rest of the process seems to be easy. This is true for the simple cases, otherwise professional help should be a better option.

I personally feel that its a waste of money, as you can prepare the application carefully (again, I´m talking simple cases) than spend 1.5 to 2 grand on the fees.

My personal experience with the big Law firms in the US is that the case will be assigned to some big shot in the firm, who will have lots of paralegals under him/her. These paralegals then really are doing "on the job" training as they take up your cases. If they are good, u get lucky, else you could have done a better job on your own, rather than spend money on courier to resend the application a gazillion times.
