Subject: Self-employed assets - how much? |

Hello all.
I am a graphic designer and animator from Croatia, Europe. I would like to apply for immigration under Self-emloyed category as I plan to start a new shop in Vancouver or Ottawa.
Since I´ve been running a small studio in Croatia for the past five years and have been in the industry for the past ten years, I´m not worried about the level of my skills and am not affraid of hard work.
However the Assets section of the application is troubling me since I could not find any specific information as to the required amount of net worth or available cash it takes.
I would also like to know if the immigration officers generally process applications individually and whether they make informed and intelligent decisions given the region-specific differences in world economies. From this (income) perspective, a successful studio (and thus a persons income) in Croatian terms would not seem so prosperous in Canadian financial terms because of service cost differences, which could influence my application unfavorably.
So, here are my questions:
In your opinion, what is the minimum recommended amount of assets and net worth for the Self-emloyed immigration application except for 10-20K for the adaptation period?
In your experience, which prevails in this application category: human capital or a persons net worth?
Should I use the services of an immigration professional for my application?
I´d appreciate your opinions.

(in reply to: Self-employed assets - how much?) All info is on the CIC site , think self-employed is identical as skilled worker.
But before you apply as self-employed, be aware that it is probably the most difficult class to qualify in, unless you´re a farmer, an athlete on an international level or an artist ( also globally known ).
If you mean entrepreneur class , then assets are 300.000 CAD minimum + 5 years of business history + out of those 5 years you need to have met at least 2 out of 4 conditions they pose whitin at least 2 years, and so on....and so
on...
Take my word for it, before you apply do a lot of research or contact a specialist.

(in reply to: Self-employed assets - how much?) Thanks John. I am planning to go for Self-employed, not Entrepreneur application. It is now not clear to me whether design, animation and illustration fall into that category.
Quote from CIC:
Relevant experience in respect of a self-employed person, means:
For at least two years in the period beginning five years before the date of application:
? Self-employment in cultural activities or athletics; OR
? Participation, at the world-class level, in cultural activities or athletics; OR
? Farm management experience.
Anyone?
Thanks.

(in reply to: Self-employed assets - how much?) If you really want to go in self-employment class then your best shot is to tell them you´re selling your designs and someone else is making them. That´s what I´ve been told at the time I wanted to apply .I´m in the jewelry business, I was schooled in designing and making of jewelry but I couldn´t proof I was actually designing and selling my designs as a profession . I always had a retail business but wasn´t in the designing business.
Still think you should ask a specialist though.

(in reply to: Self-employed assets - how much?) I get your point, John. It is necessary to prove somehow that I am an author to fall into Self-employed category and not just a businessman in which case I would have to go for Entrepreneur or Investor.
I am still not sure whether design and animation are considered "cultural activities". I´ll do some more research on that. Thanks for the tip.
