Where on Vancouver Island will you be living? I am from Victoria, so can give you info on the area if you would like. Up-island (Nanaimo etc.) I´m afraid I´m not much help. I know things are less expensive up that way.

Rents tend to run a little high, average 600/mo for a 1-brm (a nice one...) 700-800 for 2 brm. As for temp housing, if it´s just you I recommend the YWCA dorms for comfy and cheap. Also Traveller´s Inn is inexpensive but nice.

There are certain areas to avoid, just like any city...Esquimalt can be pretty rough, as well as Fernwood. Nice areas (well, my favourites ;-) are Oak Bay, James Bay, and the Cook Street area.

Cost of living in general is higher, being on an island, but I wouldnt live anywhere else on the planet. =)

There are lots of great websites for the area, too.

Hope that helped!
Cheers,
Ms. Mo

Duncan is about 1/2 an hour north of Victoria, so if you have transport it is possible to stay in Victoria and head up to Duncan to househunt.

I would recommemd getting in touch (via email I think should be possible) with some of the property management companies in Victoria. They will be able to point you in the right direction:
www.brownbros.com
www.devonprop.com/management.html
http://pembertonholmes.ca/
Also try the Victoria newspaper, they sometimes have up-island (as in Duncan) listings:
http://www.canada.com/victoria/timescolonist/index.html

That´s a start, anyways. Will also give you an idea of prices, altho Duncan will surely be less expensive. I´ve only been there once myself, lovely little town.

I hope that´s some help! Sorry for not replying sooner.
Cheers,
Ms. Mo
