Claiming Asylum

Subject: Claiming Asylum
My family are citizens of a european country that is considered democratic by the international community, although it found itself in the Amnesty International reports 3 times now for police brutality, failing to prevent acts of torture or bringing those responsible to justice or investigating the matter properly (a UN Committee against Torture has written a long full report on the matter), UN Committee on the Rights of Children has found that minorities are being violated against by teachers or staff, and bullied/violated against by peers (my family is a member of one of those ethnicities that are violated against), U.S. State Department has published a report on the country saying that certain minorities are unprotected by special provisions of Constitution and face societal and governmental discrimination (my family falls in that category).
My family had been followed by a criminal organization and later my father has been attacked by one of the members of that organization. In self-defense he shot the attacker and later served 4 years jail sentence. We have been recieving threats by the organization, and when we asked police for protection we have been told by the officer that they know what is going on but they cannot help us.
To make the story short, I realize it is very difficult to claim asylum from a country that is considered democratic. All the reports on the country violating human rights and police unable or unwilling to protect the citizens exposed to violence by criminal organizations that are being published lately, would a canadian immigration officer take that into account rather than saying the country is considered democratic? My problem is my families life has been ruined and being a citizen of a ´democratic´ country would make people disbelieve my families story, as it is unusual for someone to claim asylum from such country and because of that I have to think twice whether I can apply for asylum or should I find another way (which is very difficult) but when thinking for the future and the thought of being denied asylum because the country I´m claiming asylum from is ´democratic´ ( I keep repeating that because that´s what I´m told when speaking to people about my families case, how it is very difficult to achieve anything because of the country being considered democratic) makes me very uneasy because all I want is a normal life for me and my family, to be able to continue school and go out of the house without having to watch my back constantly.

I apologize for the long post but I am very worried, although knowing how dirty the government is in the country where I come from I do not have anything to hold on to because they and the police control everything and cover their tracks very well, I only have my families story and the Amnesty International and UN reports on the country that confirm the situation there is not that ´democratic´, that police does not offer protection to certain people or even protects the criminal organizations for their high rank connections rather than their citizens.....there is so much more I could write....but is there a chance for me and my family in Canada? Does anyone know of any asylum claims from countries considered democratic and were given protection by Canada?
Would anyone know any good Asylum Lawyers in Canada me and my family could consult with? I searched all through the internet but haven´t found any lawyers that would specialize in Asylum Claims.

Thank you for your time,

Kind regards,
Asylum Seeker

If that is in Europe you don´t even have to ask asylum , just go to another European country, there are no borders anymore, remember ?
( you´re sure it is in Europe you´re living ? isn´t it the US ? )

If asylum route does not fit, got any skills???? Skilled people are sweethearts of Canada! More so than asylum seekers or knowledge seekers..

If you can get into Canada, then you can surely apply as a refugee. There are many people from so called democratic nations who have claimed refugee status in Canada after landing. Most European countries have visa free access to Canada. Doesn´t yours? If so, then you have no problems. Just arrive, and then find a good lawyer and start the process. Bring all the proof you can. Avoid telling the immigration officers at the border that you plan to apply as a refugee. Land first.

First of all, thank you for your replies.
No, I´m pretty sure I´m from Europe :) Moving somewhere else in Europe doesn´t change anything for my family..although Europe is a big place, it´s still small, traveling throughout it is as easy for our enemies as it is for my family so we all feel much safer in Canada. Actually as I write this I am in Canada.
As far as the skilled worker goes, I don´t have the experience or education, my parents both have a trade and over 30 years experience (my dad a mechanic, mom a chef) but don´t have the education as they never needed it so to speak. I read somewhere eventhough you don´t pass the 67 point mark you could still be considered for the Skilled Worker Program, can anybody tell me more about that and what it takes for the Immigration Officer to see you will be able to economically establish yourself in Canada (I read that´s what it takes if you don´t pass the 67 points).
I know it sounds ugly but in the end every person will be fishing for the best solution to their lives problems and as I realize claiming asylum will be a tough cookie I´m looking for other options as well.

Starr, you say there are many people who claim asylum from countries considered democratic. Is there a website/database where I could read through their cases, I looked for some but only found some in Australia and I´m not really swift with the IRB website, there only seem to be cases from Sudan/India/Yugoslavia etc.

Thank you.
