Subject: marrying a canadian
I am a US citizen living in the US. My boyfriend is a Canadian citizen living in Canada. We wish to be married in the US and then live in Canada. I have been trying for days to figure out what procedures or steps to take in our situation. Some people say to get married in the US and then show them the marriage certificate at the border to get through. Then to fill out spousal sponsorship papers once we are both in Canada. Would they let me across the border with just ID, passport and a marriage certificate? Has anyone dealt with this type of situation or have any type of advice for me? I don´t know where to look or who to ask. The CIC number 1-888-242-2100 doesn´t seem to work and all the other CIC office numbers in canada and seattle don´t take incoming calls. I am at a complete loss as to where to even start. HELP!

I have heard that spousal sponsorship is faster if the spouse is outside Canada.

So let your canadian spouse sponser you once he is there.
you can travel with your US passport to Canada anyways...

if you apply inside Canada, you may not be able to work. you have to wait for your aip (approval in principle) and leaving the country is not advisable because you may not be allowed to enter by the immigration officer. waiting time is at least 6 months. if you apply outside of Canada, you may be able to visit and at the same time work in the us.

try going through the application and start gathering the documents because there is a lot. i have read a lot that fbi clearance takes a while, around 8-10 months.

good luck!
