Subject: When to import household goods? |

My fiance is in Canada; I´m in the US. We´re planning on getting married in Canada in October 2004; then we´ll apply for my permanent residence as a spouse.
What is the easiest way to import my household goods - before or after the wedding? I´d love to import my things before the wedding so as to get it all set up beforehand, but how would that work with me being in the country on a visitor visa?
Any help/advice would be appreciated!

Ditto for me (in reply to: When to import household goods?) I am in a very similiar situation and have had zero luck in finding an answer to the same question. I get conflicting answers and suggestions from all ends of the spectrum. I have found this to be one of the only questions that isn´t answered anywhere clearly. Anyone suggestions on this issue would be greatly appreciated by myself as well! Thanks in advance.

Got some answer... (in reply to: When to import household goods?) We ended up calling the Canadian consulate in Detroit. They told us that we could only import household goods duty-free after the application had been approved (I assume that means the AIP? Or maybe it´s just after it has been submitted - or is that the same thing? I need a good definition of each step...)
So basically, it doesn´t sound like we can bring in our stuff until after the wedding... and even then it´ll be a couple/few weeks after you´ve applied for PR and they´ve accepted the application.

(in reply to: When to import household goods?) Wow, this was pulled up from the dregs!
I´ve already brought in my goods - brought them in before the wedding and paid the duties on them. It was worth it to me. I´m planning on trying for a refund (as the customs agent suggested when we crossed the border) when I get AIP, which should be within the next month or two.
