Subject: Goods Accompanying List
  Hi All,

There is a defined customs form B4A for detailing the stuff we are bringing to Canada at the time of entry.

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/E/pbg/cf/b4a/README.html

Can we simply carry a computer generated list as the B4A is not computer fillable form?

Further, do we need to describe contents of each and every box or something generic like Books or Assorted tools or computer disks/ CDs/Audio/Video Cassettes etc will do alongwith estimated lumpsum value for the contents?

I was told by someone that electronic items need to include serial numbers in the list. I have 5 computers / servers and 2 laptops at home. These machines except laptops are generic/self assembled computers and do not have any serial numbers. Does it cause any problem (I will mention that these items are no brand self build items or bought over ebay). I hope there is no limit onto what I can carry with me first time if the items are for personal use ( my belonings will not exceed $25K in any case including a car. The computers and servers and other such stuff is for my self study at home.

Appreciate feedback.

Thanks

I guess if you bring like 5 computers ands tuff like that then you they will make you pay some duty... because althought they are used items and stuff its still odd for one person to carry 5 computers... its hard to believe for an immigration officer unless you can convince them good.

Second thing is that if you are making a detailed computer generalted list make sure it has as much details as possible. I can understand that its not always possible to give the exact value and exact stuff but perfect it as much as you can.

Make the life of the immigration officer easy and you wont have problems.

Cheers,

Thanks HS.

Well we have a family of four immigrating. One computer belongs to Kids. Other one is family computer. Two belong to me (they are servers). One notebook is for me and other one for my wife. I believe these days there are many families with 3 to 4 computers and laptops in a house.

Anything made in US or Mexico is exempt of duty under NAFTA as I do quite a bit of online shopping. Only trouble is with Tobacco and Alcohol. So just stay away from that.
Plus being an immigrant, you can even bring in a Ferrari duty free from any part of the world.
So nothing to worry at all. Make a list of items which will follow if that is the case.
Good Luck.

Yes you can carry whatever you like and yes you can use a computer filled form. I have used Excel sheet that look like the standard form.

Good luck.

Saleh, how did you list your goods? Were you very detailed as in the number of t-shirts, bags, etc, and the description for each item and value? Or you could just say personal effects and provide a total value? This goods things is quite confusing...
