Subject: Marrying a Canadian
Hi there I am a British Citizen and I am marrying my Canadian fiancee next year. My fiancee is currently working in Canada and I am working in the Uk. We intend to get married in the UK and then for me to move to Canada to join my fiancee. I have howver investigated this and its seems I would be able to move to Canada but not be able to work until my pr application is processed which can take up to twelve months. If I arrived in Canada am I able to apply for an emergency work permit on compassionate grounds or still have to wait the 12 months before I can work at all.
Another option we are considering is applying for common law status as we have previously lived together for 12 months ending last December. I however had to leave Canada as my work permit expired and can I still apply for common law status as we have now been living apart for 6 months. Any advice is much appreciated.

would it upset things if you got married in Canada? that way you could remain together during the sponsorship process. other option is to begin sponsorship now as commonlaw and then come to Canada once everything is complete. I have seen this scenario on another thread and it seems CIC recognizes this situation.

Thanks Sharon,
The problem is if we get married in Canada I will not be able to work until my pr application is completed and I believe this can take over a year. We are not willing to forgo a years wages plus I would get bored out of my mind not working. Is it possible when your pr application is being processed to work on a tempoary work permit on compassionate ground?

Best option:

Get married in Canada and apply for spousal sponsorship. This way you can remain in Canada with your to be wife till you get your PR which would take approx. 5-6 months. I am not sure but in such a case you would be able to work as well while your application is under process...check with CIC.

Also, your spousal sponsorhip application would not take more than 6-8 months if processed in London. Choice is yours.

Hello Rachel,

I have the similar question about the "Marrying a Canadian Citizen"........ I am here in canada with a caregiver visa. I already completed the 24 months so I actually applied for my Landed Immigrant already, but then my boyfriend who is a Canadian citizen wants us to get marry soon.

Will marrying him change my status? Will I be able to work immediately after he sponsor me? I passed the Ontario Nurses Board Exam but because of my status that I can´t practice my profession yet.

When he sponsors me, can he sponsor my children too who are both minor same time with my sponsorship? And how long is the processing for the sponsorship?

I hope you can answer me the earliest possible time...thanks.

I would like to know what is involved when buying property in Canada. I am a non-resident Canadian but my wife is a resident and Canadian citizen. Will we have trouble getting a mortgage because of my non-residency status?

Exiting Canada while residency application is being processed (in reply to: Marrying a Canadian)
I am planning on Marrying and immigrating my American boyfriend up here to Canada, (and applying with him inside canada) and I have two questions.

1) If we get married next month, and then he leaves to go home for a few months while he gets things ready to move up here, will he be detained upon reentry because were married, but he isn´t a citizen? As i,n them stopping him from coming here, because they suspect he is going to move with out applying from within his own country, as I know thats how Immigration prefers you apply.

2) He has a good job, and will still be working for that company even though he lives here. After we begin the application process, he will have to go back to the states a few times for business for a week or so. Is he allowed to leave or more over allowed to return, once the process has begun?

Thanks Jonathan, Victoria BC
