Subject: Vancouver and beatting the integration challenge
  Hi everyone,

My husband and I plan on moving to Vancouver within...well whenever our application comes throuh. I am French and have lived 10 years in the US. I´ve stayed in Canada before (for vacations)and I know I will love living there. My husband is an IT profesional with 10 years experience in network admin/security. He´s Indonesian. His English is good enough to talk about best Asian restaurant in town or the latest Star War movie, but not so great as to make a lasting impression during an interview. So,getting that first job may be a real challenge for him. In order to minimize the heartache that come with being a new immigrant with some but not perfect English in Canada, I think it would really help him if he spent his 6 to 12 first months in Vancouver to do a mid-career upgrade: find a good IT course/degree/certification program that would add to his current profile (he has a BS in electronic engineering). This would help him get to know people, hopefully start to develop a circle of friends, work on his English, and most of all give him time to adjust without the pressure of having to ´get that job right away´.
So, my question to you all Vancouver experts: Any good suggestions for a 6 to 12 months serious, advanced program/certification in IT-advanced network security/CISCO types things...We have checked out BCIT and ITI and got some ideas there, but I am looking for your concrete real life experience, knowledge, info on what´s good out there, if you don´t mind share them...

Thanks

also... Vancouver School board offers a great English as a second language program. They test you, and then place you in the appropriate level class. it is not outrageously expensive. $2-300 per semester.

Hi Chrisdarm,
I also just moved to Vancouver last December and found the city is very beautiful. I found out that UBC has pretty good course for IT in Robson Square campus (downtown Vancouver)
BTW, I´m also come from Indonesia :).
When you got to Vancouver, ask your husband to contact me :) I probably could tell him some places he need to be in order to improve his resume/interview skills without paying any cents.
My English is not that good but I still could find decent job here in Vancouver :) as a start.

Regards
Eric
