FBI fingerprints--confused!

Subject: FBI fingerprints--confused!
My husband and I are almost finished with our application, but are confused about the police clearances. Can anyone please clarify the order of events? I am reading and re-reading the instructions, and I can see two different scenarios: either we send our fingerprints (which we´ll have done at a local police dept) and check for US$18 along with our application, OR we wait until we get the FBI forms back in 3-6 weeks, then send those in with our application. Any help is much appreciated! We are SO eager to finally have this done and in the mail, and I hope we don´t have to wait any longer! :) Thanks for any help....

Please check the Buffalo CIC website at http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/can-am/menu-en.asp?mid=5&cat=68

And now specifically this part of the site: http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/can-am/menu-en.asp?act=v&mid=5&cat=68&did=398

Now right in the first paragraph CIC specifically says that:
"Do not request a police certificate from Hong Kong, the United States or Canada until you are instructed to do so by a visa office."

Now what to do about this... as the guidlines asks to submit a police certificate...

This is what you do... right now... apply without the police certificate. Along with your application you write a covering letter that explains what you are sending in the package as well as that you are not sending the police clearance certificate.

In the meantime get your FBI certificate done after say 8-10 months or so... Generally it takes about 16 months to get immigration from Buffalo. So if you get your FBI clearance done accordingly once you get your IA (Initial Assessment) then you can attach and send it along with your ROLF if you have not paid that. During IA, CIC will ask for employment papers, bank statements, and may be some other documents. You should attach the FBI clearance during that time. If you wait long during your IA you will just delay... so better get it before hand (after 8-10 months of application) FBI clearance is valid for 6 months so you should be in a proper time frame for that.

Cheers,

Just for your information that requirement was slightly changed last year. Now it says, "Do not request a
police certificate from Hong Kong or Canada until you are instructed to do so by a visa office."

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/guides/E37048.pdf

As you can see they no longer mention USA. Therefore FBI clearance should be submitted alongwith the initial application.

But I have seen on a couple of forums that Buffalo has accepted the Skilled worker immigration applications of a number of people without FBI clearance.

Hi Wannabecanadian,

If you already have your fingerprints done on the FBI card then you can go ahead and mail it to FBI with $18.

The 3-6 week wait is for those people who do not have the fingerprint card and request FBI to mail it to them.

Thanks Kenny. Do I wait for the FBI to send me something before I can send in my application (after I send them the money and fingerprints), or do they send the clearance directly to CIC? I don´t know why this one thing has me so hung up! Thanks again for any help....

I got the fingerprint card from a local FBI office and took it to a local police department for fingerprinting (make sure the branch you´re going to offers that service). I got the fingerprint card back the same day and sent it to FBI headquarters together with the $18 check. It took them 2 weeks to process it. I did call them however to relay urgency. They are very understanding. Btw, FBI phone support has been the best support I´ve received so far in the US. (just a thought...) :)

Thanks Marishik! The application says we have to send the fingerprints in as well as any papers from the FBI; did they send the fingerprints back to you? Also, where exactly did you send your fingerprints (and check)? Thanks again! And, nice to know about the phone support--that´s so rare! :)

I have a question about the FBI card itself. I went to a local police station and mentioned that I need to do "fingerprints for Canadian immigration" - the word "FBI" never got mentioned in the conversation with the clerk at the police station. Would I have got the wrong card by any chance Are there multiple cards for FBU fingerprinting for Canadian
immigration?
