Got my PR, looked for a job around Toronto for 6 months with NO success. I´m in IT with 5 years of experience in j2ee & java. The situation is just as bad in the US. Employers no longer want to sponsor/transfer H-1B. They say it´s costly and lots of paperwork. There are hundreds of people applying for a singe position. I´m heading back to my home country (India) where I don´t have to deal with work permit/paperwork anymore, and be treated like a second class employee!!!! Good luck to everyone.

"Employers no longer want to sponsor/transfer H-1B."

If you are a PR in Canada, you do not need to worry about such things.

I have known for the past 5 years that many IT jobs are going to India... why did you expect to find one in Toronto?

US experience won´t do much for you. I keep emphasizing this: People you need Canada experience...otherwise don´t even expect calls from recruiters.

How does the employer expect a new immigrant (landing from outside Canada) to have "Canadian Experience"? Catch-22!!

An employer does not expect an immigrant to have Canadian experience!!!

They also prefer to hire someone with Canadian experience.

Sooooooooooooooooooo, they will not hire you because they have compassion for your situation. Tough beans.

Look, what do you expect? Do you think their are employers out there who are thinking "we are a Canadian company, and we would really prefer to hire someone who has absolutely no Canadian experience"

When I was a new University grad, with my BA in Mechanical Engineering, I DID NOT FIND a single job post looking for someone with no Engineering experience. Instead of complaining "How do companies expect new grads to have experience?" (because I know they do not want to take a risk if they can find someone with experience) I simply tried harder to find a job.

I spent 2 months, 60 hours a week, 7 days a week, looking for work. Got an interview.... failed, got an interview.... failed, got an interview.... BOOM! Got a job.

Next job I got was through a friend.

Nest job I got was through my cousin.

The first job is the hardest, and no amount of complaining will make it easier. There are many new grads, and many immigrants who have faced this incredible catch-22, and have prevailed and started their careers.

Who ever promised you life was easy?

Hi Dave,

What´s job you´re doing now?
I´ve been working in Audio/Video Company as Product Engineer. Do you think, Audio/Video company in Canada requires many engineers?

DJ,

Right now I am sponsoring my wife to come to Canada, and I live in Colombia with her, so I am teaching English at the moment... put my engineering career on hold... I can´t speak Spanish, and engineers in Colombia make about $400 -$500 a month, so no thanks!

As far as A/V Companies hiring product engineers... sounds slim. I´m not sure if any audio or video equipment is even manufactured in Canada anymore. But, there are products manufactured in Canada, and they would see a need for product engineers (bio-mechanical products, other high end manufactured products). Southern Ontario or Southern Quebec would be you best bet as far as manufacturers.

Do a job search on the internet with just "product engineer" as your search. Read the descriptions of the companies, their products, their locations, and go from there. I was a mechanical design engineer... I worked on everything from routing wires and pipes for Toyota, to designing elevators for amusement rides. I don´t know much about what a product engineer does.
