Subject: IELTS test - Academic or General ??
  Hi,
I have received a letter from Canadian Consulate asking me to submit the IELTS test score.I have to submit that in 120 days.

How should I prepare for that ?..Is there any book/course material to prepare for that exam ?..what kind of test they take and what Score I need to get to be considered as proficient in English.

And Do I need to take the test for Academic or General modules ??

And also let me know if asking for IELTS by CIC means that rest of my documents are ok and they just need my IELTS score to decide on interview/medical ??

Thanks,
Rahul !

Rahul,

The points you need in IELTS depends on how many points do you score without the Language part.

If you score, say 55 without the language points, then you need to score atleast 12 in IELTS.

To get a 12, you need 2 sections with a Band-4 score and 2 sections with 2.

You need to take General Module of IELTS.

First book a date and place for the test ASAP give it about 2 months from now and start preparing.

You can get information on the web if you google on IELTS.

I´m sorry, You need 2 sections with a band-7 and 2 sections with a band-6 score in IELTS in order to score 12 immigrtaion points

IELTS 3 by Cambridge is a good book.
Don´t worry abt points for now. Take the appointment ASAP and appear for the test as soon as possible. (reason - God forbid you don´t perform well, then you can re-appear after 90 days again, and not before that.)

Having said that, I need to also mention that the test itself is not that hard. Its just the format of the test that you should get familiar with. The above mentioned book does a good job, and before I forget, you have to appear for the General Test (its the easier of the two).

Wish you the very best. With decent preparation you can score atleast 7 band in each section, that will give you 16 points. Any Q´s ?? feel free to ask your friends in this forum.

IELTS test - Academic or General ??) (in reply to: IELTS test - Academic or General ??)
Thanks a lot for your help ! But I had talked to the concerned person at test centres and they said that I should appear for Academic modules. So I am confused now which way to go.Anyone who has taken the IELTS test and have submitted the score would be in a better position to clear this doubt .

I had applied in Feb ´05
Got AOR APR 05
And now have got this letter a few days back and have been asked to submit teh score within 120 days.It doesn´t mention anythin like " u might score less points than incated in ur application" " ..it´s just a plain letter asking me to submit my IELTS score as the documents I have submitted are not enough to prove my language proficiency

Thanks again :)
Rahul !

Rahul,
You should refer to the Canadian immigration guidelines and need not pay attn to the person at the IELTS centre. IELTS is and independent organisation.

To help you with your decision....

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/skilled/qual-3-1.html

It advices you to take the General Test.

Hope this helps.

Take the general test. This is what CIC says and everywhere they have asked us to give general test. I have one silly question. Shud I ask the IELTS to send the result to CIC or I shud add the result ( the result which I get ) with my application because for TOEFL we ask the EST or whoever in charge to send it to the institutions they dont accept if we send it. I hope I dint confuse anyone with my question.

Saleh,

NEVER, I say NEVER, attach your personal copy with any other application request. You will not be given another copy by IELTS. There are no exceptions to this rule. (atleast none that I can think of)

But ask (e-mail) IELTS to send a copy to the institution requesting it (in this case CIC) and they will be happy to do it.
