Subject: Job Situation
I read what "user" from UK wrote and I really felt for him. I can´t believe his daugther can´t study while waiting for PR. So just want to find out what the situation is for IT jobs. I think Engineering jobs are mostly in Alberta because of the oil industry.

Can people with IT experience especially with US work experience share their job search experiences, how soon you got a job after landing and what IT fields you were in please? Is there any training available if you can´t find a job?

Most engineering jobs are in Ontario, and Quebec. I mean 2/3 of the country live in these two provinces, and they are the manufacturing heart of Canada.

The most job openings and new opportunties are in Alberta, because the oil industry is booming out there, and the whole province has only 3/5 the population of Toronto (hence, there is always labour shortages out there). However, there is very little manufacturing in Alberta, so the types of engineering positions are very limited.

Maybe HVAC in the cities... of course the cities are growing so there is some need for Civil Engineers. A lot of geological type engineers for the seismic studies, and lot of piping engineers...

Well, Alberta is small, but booming, and really lacks manufacturing. Also, its a little "red-neck" out that way, and I´d hate to be an immigrant looking to get my foot in the door out there.

Another thing about being an engineer in Alberta... you will make significantly less money than the tradesmen, and about the same as a lot of labourers.

I know welders who work on pipelines who make about $60,000 in 6 months, then live in Mexico for the rest of the year.

Kids who load dynomite into holes for seismic studies can make from $6000 to $10,000 a month... I´ve done this before, and they don´t even require you have a high-school education... very difficult work, but you make more than the seismic engineers do!

About IT jobs,

When I was living in Ottawa, it was considered "Silicon Valley North" there were tonnes of IT jobs... JDS Uniphase, Nortel Networks, ...

Then the wheels came off the whole high tech boom, thousands lost their jobs, and there were few, if any, IT jobs left in Ottawa. Not to mention, most people think that all the IT jobs will go to Asia in a matter of time.

It is not the most stable or promising profession in Canada.
