Hi,
I am currently a student in Canada, and I have filed for immigration around 2 years ago...but last time I faxed Buffalo they replied that the Background Check Results are still pending...6-7 weeks ago I applied to renew my study permit in Canada...I called them today and they said that my file was referred to a specialist???
what do you think? should I worry now...? is it because I have filed for immigration that my file went to a specialist???...Please help me...as I am very confused...

No need to worry. Did you already get a diploma or a degree from Canada institution? If no, from my point of view, they just want you pay more tuition fee before approving your PR application.
What about your IA? Interview waived? What about medical?
Which application (PR or Study Permit) went to a specialist?
If you would like to share your timeline, other might have some more opinions about your case.

I already obtained a Masters from a canadian institution ..and currently working on my PhD...
I applied for immigration in April 2003 ... file number received in June 2003...medical request April 2004..Medicals submitted May 2004...they asked for more documents but had to wait till september 2004 as I was out of the country..and my immigration file is waiting since...(late May 2005 they replied to a fax saying that the background check result is pending)...
I applied for my study permit in early May 2005...today they told me the application (study permit) was sent to a specialist...
I´m becoming very "impatient" .. especially that everything is pending...I had plans to leave for a summer break in July...but it´s way out of reach now...

Well, my case is very similar... And I also applied to renew my Study Permit at the end of May, but I didn´t make any inquiries about it yet... One thing you certainly need to do, is to get CAIPS notes and see what they have in your file.

Well Study permit is taken care at Vegerville, AB and your immigration is taken care at Buffalo... so its two different things here...
Dont worry... things are all fine...
But in the meantime take your AOR and give it to the university and they will charge you the local fees...
Most of the university will charge you the local fees as you are considered to be a resident once you get the AOR...
Its a loophole in the system... I was in the same boat and I paid domestic fees while my process was going on... saved a hell lot of money... Ohh btw I was at YORK U

HS, I´m not so sure about tuition fees reduction. I´ve heard that you´d need IA to do that (as opposed to AOR).

what is IA and what is AOR????
I doubt this would work ... I don´t know...I hope it does...as I would save a huge sum of money
as for the processing is in Alberta or Buffalo...why do you think they are not related...I guess they are the same "immigration files"...besides all my friends who didn´t file for immigration already got their permits back..

Yes, it´s _too_good_ to be true. At least in my university, one has to have the PR visa to be able to pay local tutitions,
AI or even PP is not enough.
