Subject: child with down syndrome
I and my wife had a child born with down syndrome and currently the child is diagnosed with leukemia and so far he is responding well to the chemotherapy treatment. We are confident he will become alright in a year or so and now if I start applying for PR is there a chance that the application will be rejected on medical terms? As a principal applicant I have already scored 74 points using the self-assessment tool.

I would be interested in your comments!

thank you.

They do not do any kind of medical testing for a child. You can go through details of medical test for a infant on CIC site.IF you think he would be ok very soon so DO Not tell to the doctor while testing ...

I disagree with the above answer. Look at CIC´s website:

"You must pass a medical examination before coming to Canada. Your dependants must also pass a medical examination even if they are not coming with you.

Applications for permanent residence will not be accepted if that person?s health:

is a danger to public health or safety; or
would cause excessive demand on health or social services in Canada."

I´d encourage you to apply.....not that very expensive process if you are in the USA considering your career ambitions. Good luck and wishing you and family all bests.

I have a similar situation, son has bipolar disorder which requires regular medication. I´m applying anyway, you should do the same. It all does seem subjective. What is meant by "excessive demand" on health and social services? Are we talking HIV/AIDS, or simply regular medication?

Actually children with down syndrome does not give an excessive demand on health services but may be social services but the problem itself lies with Leukemia and this may need around ?200,000 equivalent to CAN$ 300,000 and currently my health insurance pays for that in Germany so once this disease is cured in Germany I don´t think it will be a burden for Canada in the future and the risk would be only if the disease inverts and I wish my child will not be a victim again. I am going with my application procedure anyway and I am going to consult the DMP´s around my place to find out their word.

thanks to HC and others for your comments and I wish Greg good luck.

mild learning delay (in reply to: child with down syndrome)
We are in the process of applying under the skilled worker catorgery to Canada immigration. My joungest son Conor aged 11 has been assesed by a clinical phycologist has having a mild global learning delay but his social behavour is that of his peers. Woul he be likely to fall in the inadmissible class due to excesive demand on health and social services. He has only ever attended a main stream school.
