Subject: Union activity a concern?
I may have already asked in this forum, but I want to start unionizing my workplace (restaurant) and I´m concerned about that hurting my chance in my application. It would be with the Industrial Workers of the World (www.iww.org). This union exists in USA, Canada, and Australia, they are somewhat unconventional, but not violent or anything. If I join, should I not mention it on my application? Would they know? More importantly, would they really care, it is just a trade union of sorts. Visit the site and let me know what you all think, or should I not bother joining because it is too risky?

So long as the group is not considered to be criminal, nor a terrorist group you should be fine.

As far as unions go, Canada is not a right wing dictatorship where union leaders are shot, and unionized employees are kidnapped and tortured in soccer stadiums. All though the unions in Canada appear to be shrinking, and critizm of them is growing, we are left thinking country with many socialist ideals... even our right wing political parties have some Canadian born socialist ideals that they would not dream of changing unless they wanted to commit political suicide. For instance, discriminating against people for joining a union would not only be illegal, but would lose you perhaps a million votes in manufacturing hot beds like southern Ontario or southern Quebec... not to mention the stikes! LOL!

I grew up in southern Ontario. My father was a unionized employee for 31 years at GM, my grandfather a unionized employee at Firestone for 45 years. Government employees in Canada are for the most part, unionized, so are teachers, many factory workers, proffesional atheletes, and a lot of trades people.

The people at CIC who look at your application will belong to some sort of civil service union.

Just look into whether or not this union you are considering is under any internation scrutiny for illegal activities (it does not matter if its Marxist or Communist) or terrorist activities. Don´t lie about anything on your application. Don´t volunteer information that they do not specifically ask for.
