Subject: Work permits - spouse's presence and expired passp
  Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help me with the situation below:
I applied for a work permit to Buffalo in May and received a letter from the consulate asking to submit our passports. Took them over seven weeks to process it, by the way.

Our big issue is that my wife´s passport expires in just about two weeks. The letter says each passport has to be valid for another six months. She applied for a new passport back in April but it may take another month before it is issued. The Consulate won´t wait that long and both passports must be submitted at once.

I should also mention that we are currently in Canada and need a US visa to get to the Buffalo Consulate. We don´t think this should be a problem though as we have already spoken to the US Embassy in Ottawa. We also have a PR application in process at Buffalo as well.

Anybody has had a similar experience or can share any insight on what to do? Can I just show up myself with both passports and have it sorted out? I am worried that she won´t be allowed back to Canada with her expired passport.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

- Max

have you tried informing the buffalo of the situation and ask for an extension? send a fax to them and provide a proof that your wife had requested a new passport and you are just waiting for it to come back. i´m not too sure really but hopefully this will work. sorry.

Hi Anonymous,

Thanks for the tip. I am not sure if faxing them is going to help. I faxed them once asking for the status of the application and got no reply. I think what I am going to do is just show up with the expiring passport and a letter stating that she has applied for a new one. Hopefully that will convince them to issue her a work permit at least.
