Subject: IELTS advice after I passed
  Hello all!

Just got my general IELTS score: reading and listening 7.0, speaking 8, and writing 9. I can´t believe that I passed, but I did!

So, for all of you that need some advice and encouragement:

Listening is hard and tricky. Also it is first to be tested. I lost focus on the third module (there are four all together) and had to almost keep guessing all the way to the end. It?s easy to loose attention with spending too much time on a question (read them before the test module starts!!!) or in my case I simply got caught up in the dialog that I was listening to (what a stupid reason!!). Another reason is that you may see an unfamiliar question format and start trying to figure out what the heck that is. Accents used were British, Australian, and American. Somehow I got it all on 7.0. Check these free audio samples, they help a lot: http://www.esl-lab.com/

Other parts are ok. If you speak the language you are ok, can?t learn much there in two weeks if you are not doing good, but that doesn?t mean you will fail. You will not get 9. That?s all. However, get familiar with the questions format. They can be all stupid sometimes.

Writing, I almost didn?t make it. Not much time. Just start writing without spending too much time on what to write and how to form things at the beginning. It seems like one hour is enough, but trust me, it is not! And I consider myself a good writer (got 9 after all). So, I spent too much time doodling around in the beginning trying to make my thoughts perfect and almost didn?t make it. In other words, when I stopped writing my last sentence it was the end and I had no time to re-read what I just wrote.

My advice: use the time given to read the questions! Don?t spend much time trying to figure out the format of the exam. The format you should know before you come, otherwise you can?t pass.

The exam is NOT hard, but it requires a lot of focus and attention.

That?s all. I hope it helps. Btw., my native language is Polish, which means it is in a totally different language group. I didn?t study a lot, just did what I just told you.

I didn´t use any official study guides. I only familiarized myself with the test formats, and practiced the listening while answering questions (see http://www.esl-lab.com/ ) at the same time. Since the test is to assess your actual knowledge of the language, preparing for the test means working on your English as much as you can. That you can do by talking to people, reading newspapers or books, writing sample essays at home. I think the official guides are just a waste of money. There is absolutely nothing on the exam that requires "cracking the system". The only thing you MUST be familiar with is the questions format since there is no time to figure such things out during the exam.
